US President Donald Trump says he has pardoned Ross Ulbricht, a life sentence convict who was the founder of the Silk Road darknet trading site.

"I just called Ross William Ulbricht's mother to let her know that in honor of her and the Libertarian movement that has supported me so strongly, I was pleased to have just signed a full and unconditional pardon for her son Ross," he wrote on his Truth Social network.

He also said that the people working on Ross' conviction were also involved in the government's "modern weaponization" against Trump.

"He got two life sentences plus 40 years. Ridiculous!" - he concluded.

Earlier, on January 8, 2021, media outlets reported that former Utah District Attorney Brett Tolman, a former federal prosecutor for the District of Utah who advised the White House on pardons and commutations of sentences, received $22,500 from an Arizona resident who hired him to petition for the pardon of Ross Ulbricht, founder of the online drug-selling platform Silk Road. Ulbricht was sentenced to life in prison in 2015.
