European Commission head Ursula von der Leyen said on January 21 that an era of fierce competition for resources and technology has begun in the world.

"The world's largest economies are competing for access to raw materials, new technologies and global trade routes. From artificial intelligence to clean technology, from quantum technologies to space, from the Arctic to the South China Sea," she said at a session of the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland, the text of the speech published on the EC website.

According to von der Leyen, these processes are likely to be accompanied by more frequent use of sanctions, export controls and tariffs. At the same time, the head of the EC recognized that the promises of prosperity of the global world have not been fulfilled.

She also said that next week will be presented a strategy to improve the competitiveness of the European Union in the next five years.

The day before, the European Commission announced the publication of a plan to completely abandon the EU from Russian fossil energy resources. The representative of the body Anna-Kaisa Itkonen called the relevant efforts of Brussels successful. According to her, the Europeans have given up coal, the majority of oil supplies, as well as 2/3 of gas from Russia.

Earlier, on January 17, vice-speaker of the Slovak Parliament Andrei Danko said about the stagnation of the European Union. He expressed the opinion that the association was behind Russia and other major world powers at every step.
