Scholz called Musk's remarks a threat to democracy in Europe
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said on January 17 that statements by American entrepreneur and billionaire Ilon Musk are a threat to European democracy.
"He [Musk] supports right-wing extremists everywhere: in Europe, the UK, the FRG and many other countries. And this is completely unacceptable, as it hinders the democratic development of Europe and threatens our commonality," Scholz said.
He emphasized that criticism should not even focus on the fact that billionaires from other countries can allow themselves to express an opinion on German politics, but on the very content of their statements.
Thus, according to Scholz, Musk's support for the far-right is unacceptable, even if he does it out of business interests or political views.
Earlier, on January 10, it was reported that the Bundestag began a check in connection with the possible illegal influence of Musk on the upcoming elections to the Parliament of the Federal Republic of Germany. It is specified that his conversation with the candidate for chancellor of the "Alternative for Germany" (AdG) Alice Weidel on his online platform in the network X (former Twitter) caused concern in the Bundestag.
The Bundestag administration will check whether this is an attempt to interfere in the election campaign or illegal assistance to the party.
Before that, on December 31, 2024, Musk published a post insulting Scholz and President Frank-Walter Steinmeier. At the same time, the American entrepreneur expressed confidence in the victory of the AdG in future parliamentary elections.
