Scholz has been officially endorsed as a candidate for Chancellor of Germany

Olaf Scholz has been officially approved as a candidate for chancellor of Germany from the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) in early parliamentary elections. This was reported by the German edition of ZDF on January 11.
The publication specifies that his candidacy was approved at the party congress of the SPD.
Early parliamentary elections will be held on February 23.
Earlier the same day the party "Alternative for Germany" (AdG) officially approved Alice Weidel as a candidate for Chancellor of Germany in the upcoming elections to the Bundestag. It is noted that for the first time in the 45-year history of the party nominated its own candidate for the post of Chancellor.
SPD leadership unanimously nominated the incumbent Chancellor of Germany Scholz as a candidate for the elections on November 25, 2024. Prior to that, on November 17, the Greens endorsed Vice Chancellor and Economy Minister Robert Habeck as a candidate for Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany.
German newspaper Bild noted on December 28 that Scholz was less likely to become the country's head of government again. According to media reports, 14-16% of voters are ready to vote for Scholz, while, for example, for the leader of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) Friedrich Merz - 31-33%.
On December 16, the Bundestag revoked the confidence of Scholz's government. German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier then endorsed February 23, 2025 as a possible date for early parliamentary elections.
