The victory of the "Alternative for Germany" (AfD) party in the elections in Mecklenburg—Vorpommern is an internal matter of Germany. This was announced on September 21 by Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov.

"This is an internal matter of Germany. And here we would not like to comment in depth on anything," he said at a briefing.

Peskov also stressed that the Kremlin records "rather low figures of popularity of the rating among the current government of Germany." In addition, the Kremlin's official representative pointed to the decline in the competitiveness of the German economy.

On September 20, the regional election commission announced that the AfD party had won the elections to the Landtag (regional parliament) of the federal state of Mecklenburg—Vorpommern. The party received 38.2% of the vote.

The results of a YouGov opinion poll published on September 17 showed that almost half of German residents believe that Friedrich Merz will leave his post before the end of 2026. This opinion is shared by 48% of respondents, while 31% believe that Merz will retain his position until the end of the year. The survey was conducted among 1,611 adult residents of Germany.
