Amid escalating trade disputes between Washington and Ottawa, US President Donald Trump showed off a map on which he personally renamed Lake Ontario Lake America. This became known from a video clip that the head of the White House posted on TikTok on August 27.

"So, this is Lake Ontario in Canada and in the USA, but we will make a small change. We're not going to call it Ontario, but something else. We'll call it Lake America, and all it takes is a good pen and a little wit," Trump said in the video before crossing out the former geographical name on a paper map with a marker.

At the end of his demonstration, the American leader added that the geographical feature under the former name no longer exists, and urged the audience to get used to the new name. Trump also recalled that he had previously renamed the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America in a similar way.

On August 25, Trump announced that Washington was considering renaming Lake Ontario to Lake America. Lake Ontario is one of the five Great Lakes of North America and is located on the border of the United States and Canada. Trump's statement came amid another escalation in trade relations between Washington and Ottawa. Earlier, the US president criticized the Canadian authorities and the governor of Ontario, Douglas Ford, because of disagreements in the field of trade.

The United States re-imposed 50 percent tariffs on Canadian goods on August 22. According to Greer, the Canadian side rejected an offer that would have allowed Ottawa to improve the position of its exporters in the American market.
