- The Russian Foreign Ministry called on international structures to prevent a catastrophe in Kosovo
Moscow calls on international structures to take all necessary measures to prevent the humanitarian catastrophe that is brewing in Kosovo and Metohija. This was stated on August 21 in a comment by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova.
"We demand that the UN mission in Kosovo take full responsibility for solving the tasks prescribed by its mandate, which include contributing to the creation of conditions for peaceful coexistence of the peoples living in the province," the agency's website says.
The diplomat pointed out that the current situation in the region indicates an increase in deliberate terror against the local Serbian population. At the same time, the authorities of the European Union (EU) have completely failed their efforts to mediate and resolve the situation in the autonomous province of Kosovo and Metohija.
"The situation looks all the more bizarre because the provisional self—government bodies in Pristina are doing this - the very ones that claim to be legitimate authorities. <...> The oppression of people based on ethnicity occurs with the connivance of the international presences deployed in this part of Serbia under the auspices of NATO, the EU and the UN," Zakharova stressed.
During telephone talks on March 30, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Serbian President Alexander Vucic from both sides stressed the fundamental importance of UN Security Council Resolution 1244 for resolving the Kosovo problem, as well as the need to ensure the rights of Republika Srpska within Bosnia and Herzegovina. The conversation took place at the initiative of Belgrade.
As Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov noted on April 15, Brussels is trying to turn Serbia into a buffer zone against Russia. He recalled that Serbia was given two conditions for joining the EU: recognition of the independence of the self-proclaimed Kosovo, as well as joining all European sanctions against Russia.
