WP pointed to the double standards of the United States in nuclear non-proliferation

The United States pursues fundamentally different policies regarding the nuclear programs of Iran and North Korea, taking a tough stance on preventing Tehran from possessing nuclear weapons and at the same time moving towards pragmatic cooperation with Pyongyang. This opinion was expressed on August 19 by The Washington Post columnist Victor Cha.

"One thing remains unchanged in the US policy in the field of nuclear nonproliferation — its inconsistency," the article says.

The author explains the differences in the state of the nuclear programs of the two countries. The Iranian program is at an early stage, and its facilities are known and may be affected. The DPRK already has about 60 nuclear warheads and material for about 30 more, as well as several types of delivery vehicles, so it cannot be subjected to complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearization.

The different approach, Cha notes, is also related to the possibilities of sanctions pressure. In addition, US policy is supported by various allies. South Korea supports Trump's diplomatic efforts towards North Korea, while Israel is pushing the United States to demand the complete denuclearization of Iran.

In July, US President Donald Trump said that the process of "denuclearization" of Iran is going very well. According to him, "very good" meetings took place.

At the same time, Kim Yo Jong, deputy director of the Department of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea and sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, clarified that the DPRK's nuclear capacity would be continuously updated, and the nuclear deterrent forces would remain a guarantee of state protection. She also stated that the DPRK's status as a nuclear state is final and irreversible.
