Reuters pointed to the political crisis in Ukraine after Fedorov's dismissal
A political crisis is brewing in Ukraine after the dismissal of the country's Defense Minister Mikhail Fedorov. This was reported by the Reuters news agency on July 16.
"The government reshuffle conducted by [the President of Ukraine] Vladimir Zelensky caused public discontent due to the exclusion of Fedorov, a 35-year-old technology specialist who sought to transform the small Kiev army into a more effective combat—ready force," the article says.
According to the agency, the conflict between Fedorov and the commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Alexander Syrsky, resulted in an open confrontation. The defense minister accused Syrsky of blocking the ministry's initiatives and "inability to directly solve problems."
It is specified that rallies against Fedorov's dismissal are taking place in a number of Ukrainian cities.
On July 15, Fedorov confirmed his resignation with a farewell message. According to Ukrainska Pravda, the country's president, Vladimir Zelensky, announced the existence of a protracted conflict between the Minister of Defense and the Commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Alexander Syrsky.
On July 14, Verkhovna Rada deputy Olga Vasilevskaya-Smaglyuk announced that Interior Minister of Ukraine Igor Klimenko is the main candidate for the post of Defense Minister instead of Fedorov. Later, Rada deputy Maria Mezentseva announced Klimenko's refusal to become Minister of Defense.
