Experts appreciated the cancellation of homework for the first grades

Impact on the learning process
The press service of the Ministry of Education and Science of Russia reported earlier in the day that first-grade students in Russian schools will study without compulsory homework.
Zimfira Yusupova, a primary school teacher and an expert on the Presidential Platform "Russia is a Land of Opportunity," noted that canceling homework only reinforces established practice.
According to her, this will not negatively affect the results, since in the first grade, education traditionally takes place without grades. The main goal of this period is to adapt the child and form his desire to learn.
Yusupova emphasized that penmanship and numeracy skills are practiced directly in the classroom. Previously, homework was often done by parents, which prevented the teacher from seeing the real picture of the student's knowledge. Now the focus is shifting to organizing classroom work, for example, through the use of five-minute test tasks at the beginning of classes and game diagnostic formats.
"The child understands: "I'm coping on my own in class, I'm doing great, school is my territory." Having retained cognitive interest in the first grade (without killing it by boring rewriting lines in the evening), we get a more mature student in the second or third grade, who starts asking for additional assignments on his own," Yusupova said.
Psychological justification
Psychologist Alena Brodskaya considers the abolition of homework as a necessary psychohygienic measure. The period of starting school is a crisis for the psyche of a child who is forced to spend several hours a day in a static position. The additional evening workload only prolongs the state of stress, depriving the first-grader of the opportunity to recover.
Brodskaya explained that at the age of seven, a child's motivation is situational and depends on a sense of success. When studying turns into a tedious evening duty, cognitive interest quickly fades.
The absence of mandatory homework allows children to spend their free time playing, which is the only tool for processing the impressions they received during the day.
"Canceling homework gives the child back the right to free play, which is the only tool for processing daytime experiences. This directly reduces the level of anxiety and somatic reactions that we often see in first—graders by October," said Alena Brodskaya.
Recommendations for parents
Experts urge parents to change their approach to supporting their child outside of school. Instead of doing exercises together, adults are advised to focus on following the daily routine and creating a calm emotional atmosphere.
