In Germany, Mercedes-Benz employees protested over cost cuts

More than 30,000 employees of the Mercedes-Benz carmaker took part in protests across Germany, opposing the company's austerity measures. This was reported by the DPA news agency on July 3.

According to the trade union, about 33,000 people participated in the demonstrations. It is noted that the current actions may be the beginning of a large-scale protest campaign.

The reason for the workers' discontent was the cost-saving measures announced by Mercedes-Benz in June. Then the company announced that about 90 thousand of the approximately 108 thousand employees would not receive the expected annual bonus in July — its payment was postponed to next year.

Kirill Dmitriev, head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) and special presidential envoy for investment and economic cooperation with foreign countries, said on July 2 that German Chancellor Friedrich Merz needs to stop following the failed course that German citizens hate. In this way, he reacted to the report of the Clash Report platform, according to which Merz's approval rating fell to an all-time low.

On June 26, political analyst Alexander Rahr expressed the opinion that Merz's position remains extremely shaky. He noted that the constant disagreements within the ruling coalition and the government's inability to organize the necessary reforms could lead to a political crisis, the early dissolution of parliament and a change of government.
