Cosmetologist warned about the dangers of using tanning oil
Tanning oils do not provide protection from UV radiation and can create a false sense of security, which increases the risk of burns and skin damage. All the details are in the Izvestia article.
What is the difference between tanning oils and SPF
Maria Polner, a cosmetologist and dermatovenerologist at Olymp Clinic Sadovaya, explained that tanning oils are not protective agents. Their main function is to make the skin shine and visually emphasize the tan. In contrast, SPF creams reduce the amount of ultraviolet light reaching the skin, preventing burns and damage to cell DNA.
The oil itself does not cause a burn, but it creates a false sense of security. Because of this, people spend more time in the sun, receiving a dangerous dose of radiation. In addition, the composition of such products often includes perfumes and extracts that provoke allergies.
Causes of severe edema
Some components, such as furocoumarins in bergamot or citrus oil, increase skin sensitivity to the sun. Under the influence of ultraviolet radiation, they trigger phototoxic dermatitis, which is manifested by burning, blistering and persistent pigmentation.
"That is why patients sometimes describe the pronounced swelling of the face as 'the face has become like a sponge,'" Polner noted.
The specialist stressed that if the swelling spreads to the lips, tongue or throat, it becomes life-threatening. In such cases, as well as in case of difficulty breathing or hoarseness of voice, it is necessary to call an ambulance immediately.
Myths about injections and the sun
The widespread belief that fillers or botulinum toxin can "melt" in the sun is a myth. The problem lies in the tissue reaction: high temperature dilates blood vessels and increases blood circulation, which leads to pronounced swelling and inflammation in the injection area.
"After fillers, it is better to postpone active exposure to the sun until the swelling, bruises and puncture marks completely disappear," Polner warned.
In the first days after the procedures, it is recommended to avoid baths, saunas and intense physical exertion. If the patient has recently had "beauty injections", the best choice for skin protection will be an SPF 50+ cream, which must be applied carefully, without massaging the treated areas.
