In Russia, signs and beliefs were given special importance. They were used to determine when to sow and harvest, have weddings and go on a trip. Every day of the national calendar was full of rituals and superstitions. Izvestia tells about the signs for June 19th and the church holidays that fall on this date.

In the folk tradition, June 19 is called "Larion Propolnik". On this day, peasants went to the fields and gardens to get rid of weeds. People believed that after the holiday, it would become much more difficult to deal with weeds and they could destroy crops.
The waning Moon was considered a particularly favorable time for weeding. According to beliefs, weeds pulled out during this period will not bother farmers for a long time. But during the full moon, the weeds were not touched even by Larion Weeding — they believed that otherwise the beds could quickly overgrow.
Unmarried girls went to the garden early in the morning to water the plants. It was believed that on this holiday, the earth bestows strength and beauty to those who take care of it.
The ancestors paid great attention to weather signs, which helped determine the nature of summer and the future harvest. A warm and sunny day promised a good grain harvest, and heavy dew in the morning promised large grains.
Other signs of the day
- early in the morning, thunder is heard — it will rain in the afternoon; ringing thunder foreshadows a downpour, muffled — a light drizzle;
- a sharp cold snap leads to an improvement in the weather;
- bees are swarming on the flowers — the day will be clear;
- grasshoppers are chirping loudly in the field — the weather will be fine in the coming days;
- The quail screams — it's going to rain;
- rye begins to crop from the bottom — to a rich harvest, from the middle — to an average, from the top — to a poor harvest.
What not to do on June 19th
There were many prohibitions associated with Larionov's Day in Russia, the violation of which, according to beliefs, could attract troubles, conflicts and failures. The girls did not smell flowers on the holiday — it was believed that this would lead to problems in their personal lives.
What else can't be done on June 19th
- working in someone else's garden leads to quarrels with the owners;
- spouses to do weeding together — to a quarrel;
- Going on long—distance trips may turn out to be unsuccessful;
- to make deals, make large purchases, change jobs or housing — to setbacks and troubles;

What is the church holiday on June 19th?
On June 19, the Orthodox Church honors the memory of St. Hilarion the New, Dalmatian, who lived in the VIII–IX centuries. At the age of twenty, he took monastic vows, and then moved to the Dalmatian monastery, where he became a disciple of St. Gregory the Decapolite. Soon he was ordained a presbyter, and then, at the insistence of Patriarch Nikephoros, he was appointed abbot of the Dalmatian monastery.
In 813, the iconoclast Leo the Armenian ascended to the imperial throne. Saint Hilarion openly denounced the emperor of heresy, for which he was tortured. The impious patriarch Theodotus, who took the place of the exiled Nikephoros, sought the saint's renunciation of Orthodoxy, but he remained steadfast. At the request of the monks of the Dalmatian monastery, the monk was allowed to return to the monastery, but under Emperor Theophilus he was arrested again and sent into exile.
After Theophilus' death, the Holy Empress Theodora returned Hilarion and the other confessors from exile. The monk returned to the Dalmatian monastery, again assumed the abbacy, and died peacefully in 845.
Also on June 19, Orthodox believers remember St. Jonah, Bishop of Velikopermsky, who lived in the XV century. In 1455, Metropolitan Jonah of Moscow ordained him to the episcopate, and the saint devoted himself to the Christian enlightenment of the peoples of Great Perm (modern territory of the Komi-Permyak district of Perm Krai) — Zyryans, Ostyaks and Voguls. By 1463, by preaching the word of God, the bishop had finally converted the population of these lands to Orthodoxy. He died peacefully on June 6, 1470. The relics of the saint were laid in the Church of the Annunciation of the Most Holy Theotokos on Ust-Vym.
Prayers for June 19th
Orthodox believers pray to St. Hilarion the New, Dalmatian, on June 19. He is asked to protect his faith, strengthen his spiritual powers, and help him fight temptations. Saint Jonah of Velikopermsky is also worshipped on this day. They turn to him with requests for the enlightenment of the lost, protection from troubles and the cessation of strife.

Pray for us, holy Father, for your spiritual children, for you have Boldness to the Heavenly King: do not be silent for us to the Lord, and do not despise us who honor you with faith and love: remember us unworthy at the Throne of the Almighty, and do not stop praying for us to Christ God, for you have been given the grace to pray for us. We don't think you're dead.: For though you have passed away from us in body, but you are still alive after death, do not depart from us in spirit, preserving us from the arrows of the enemy and all the charms of demons and the machinations of the devil, our good shepherd.
