In August 2026, Orthodox Christians will celebrate one of the main holidays of the church calendar — the Transfiguration of the Lord, popularly known as the Apple Savior. On this day, believers bring the first fruits of the new harvest to churches, and the strict restrictions of the Dormition Fast are softened by joy at the transformation of the world and the human soul. Read more about the traditions and prohibitions of the holiday in the Izvestia article.

When will the Apple Rescue be in 2026

Yablochny Savior, officially referred to in the church calendar as the Transfiguration of the Lord, has a fixed date — August 19th. In 2026, it falls on a Wednesday. The holiday was established in honor of the evangelical event when Jesus Christ was transfigured in front of His disciples on Mount Tabor, revealing His divine nature to them.

In the folk tradition, the Transfiguration of the Lord is called the Apple Savior, because by the middle of August in the middle zone of Russia, the apples of the new harvest are just ripening. The holiday is the second of the three August Rescues — after Honey (August 14) and before Nut or Bread (August 29). It is believed that from this day on, nature unfolds from summer to autumn: the nights become colder, and migratory birds begin to gather in flocks.

What kind of day did the Apple Savior save and why is the holiday associated with the Transfiguration of the Lord?

The Transfiguration of the Lord is one of the twelve great feasts — the 12 most important dates of the church year, dedicated to the events of the Savior's earthly life. The meaning of the celebration lies in the name itself: this day commemorates the Transfiguration of Jesus Christ in front of the three closest apostles — Peter, James and John, which took place on Mount Tabor. According to the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke, the Savior took the disciples and climbed to the top to pray.

During prayer, the face and clothes of Christ shone with a white light. The astonished apostles saw the Old Testament prophets Moses and Elijah conversing with the Lord about his coming sufferings. Then a bright cloud enveloped the mountain, from which the voice of God the Father rang out, proclaiming: "This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; listen to Him." The apostles fell to the ground in horror, and when they got up, they saw the Teacher in front of them, no longer shining with a blinding light.

The celebration of the Transfiguration began in the fourth century. Initially, it did not have a clear date, but since about the 7th century, Orthodox believers began to celebrate it on August 19. According to church teaching, Christ revealed his divine essence in order to show his disciples the future transformation of human nature and the second coming of the Savior "on clouds in glory with angels." This event has the greatest meaning: every person who believes in the Savior can be granted a personal transformation by receiving the light of Tabor.

Why do they consecrate fruits on Yablochny Spas?

The consecration of fruits on the day of the Transfiguration is an ancient church custom. In Byzantine liturgical practice, grapes of a new harvest were brought to the feast, and in the Russian tradition apples took their place as the most common fruits for most regions of the country.

The meaning of this custom is not limited to a household custom or a harvest ceremony. Believers bring first fruits to God as a sign of gratitude for the gifts they have received and as a reminder that human work must be sanctified by prayer.

In temples, not only apples are usually consecrated on this day, but also grapes, pears, plums, vegetables and other fruits. After the service, it is customary to distribute them to loved ones, take them home, and share them with those in need.

The main traditions of the Apple Savior in Russia

The celebration of the Apple Savior combines church and folk traditions. The central event of the day is the festive Divine Liturgy in Orthodox churches dedicated to the Transfiguration of the Lord. After the service, the rite of consecration of the fruits of the new harvest takes place. Parishioners bring baskets with them to church with apples, pears, plums, nuts, grapes and wheat ears. This custom symbolizes the spiritualization of nature and the bringing of the firstfruits of the harvest as a gift to God.

After prayer and sprinkling with holy water, the fruits can be eaten. It is customary to share consecrated apples with loved ones and those in need. The people said: "On the Second day, I saved you and the beggar will eat an apple." In Russia, it was believed that whoever distributed more consecrated fruits would receive a special blessing for the whole year. The more apples you give, the more you will gain God's grace and live a long, happy life.

In addition to visiting the temple, there were a number of folk customs. People saw off the sunset in the field, accompanying it with songs, welcoming autumn. In the evening, it was customary to gather at a large family table, the main treat on which were apples. On the holiday, the housewives baked apple pies, boiled jams and compotes to preserve the taste of the harvest for the winter.

What you can and can't do in Yablochny Spas

In Russia, there were a number of strict prohibitions, the observance of which was considered mandatory. On this day, it was not customary to do heavy physical work around the house and in the garden. Sewing, knitting, cleaning, and construction work were postponed. There is a saying among the people: "Whoever sews for the Savior sheds tears until the end of his days."

It was also not necessary to engage in harvesting, cooking, with the exception of a festive meal, and harvesting crops for future use. It was forbidden to celebrate noisily, arrange parties and abuse alcohol.

It was strictly forbidden to quarrel, swear, envy, wish harm to others and refuse help. Yablochny Spas is a day of grace, and any quarrel, according to popular belief, could disrupt the peace in the house for the whole year. Those who violated these rules risked losing their happiness and prosperity. It was impossible to eat apples alone, otherwise misfortune could befall a person. It was also believed that you can't kill insects on Apple Pie — if you scare away a fly that landed on your hand, you won't see any luck all year.

Today, on Yablochny Saviour, believers invite guests home and treat them with consecrated apples, pastries and jam. On a holiday, one should not argue and conflict, it is better to devote it to peaceful and warm communication with loved ones.

Folk signs and beliefs about Yablochny Savior

Although the church condemns omens and beliefs, in Russia the Apple Savior has always been perceived as an important natural and spiritual landmark. The people said: "Since the Transfiguration of the Savior, the weather has been transformed" and "What kind of Savior is such a winter." According to the weather on August 19, the nature of the upcoming cold season was predicted. Thick morning dew, especially if it did not evaporate for a long time, was considered a sign of a mild winter. If it is clear and dry on the day of the Savior, then autumn will be sunny and winter will be harsh. A fine day on Preobrazhenie was associated with a sharp cold snap.

The rain on Yablochny Spas, on the contrary, foreshadowed a fruitful year. The heavy dew in the morning indicated a rich harvest of mushrooms. If there are especially many stars visible on the night of the Savior, autumn will be clear and cold. The north wind on this day foreshadowed early frosts, and the south wind with swirls of dust on the roads — heavy snowfall in winter. Thunder and high-flying clouds hinted at a warm autumn and good weather.

There was also a belief that nature freezes on Apple Day to rest and produce a new crop next summer. Special importance was attached to the behavior of insects: if two flies land on your hand on this day, the year will be successful both in business and in your personal life. It was believed that consecrated apples acquire a special power: when you take a bite of the first piece, you should make a wish, and it will come true. The last piece of the consecrated apple, eaten with a wish, will also help it come true.

How is Yablochny Spas connected with the Dormition Fast

Yablochny Spas falls on the middle of the Dormition Fast, which begins on August 14 and ends on August 28 with the feast of the Dormition of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This fast is considered one of the strictest in Orthodoxy, and its purpose is to prepare believers for the great feast of the Assumption.

There are food restrictions throughout the entire fast. Believers refuse to consume alcohol, eggs, dairy products, fish and meat. However, in honor of the Transfiguration of the Lord, indulgences are allowed: it is allowed to put a dish of fish on the table and drink some wine. At the same time, strong alcoholic beverages are completely excluded.

In Russia, before the Apple Savior, they traditionally refrained from eating apples and some other fruits of the new harvest. This rule had a deep meaning: even in everyday life, a Christian strives for the sanctification of all his actions and objects, bringing the fruits of his labors to God. The consecration of fruits in the temple on August 19 removes this ban, and from that day on, apples, pears, plums and other fruits of the new harvest can be eaten. Thus, the Apple Savior marks an important stage in the passage of the Dormition fast — the transition from strict abstinence to permission to eat the consecrated gifts of nature.
