- Putin was informed about the launch of one of the most powerful scientific complexes
One of the most modern synchrotrons in the world, the Siberian Ring Photon Source (SKIF), is being completed near Novosibirsk. At a meeting with Vladimir Putin on June 9, the head of the Ministry of Education and Science, Valery Falkov, said that the first experiments on the installation would begin this fall. The Russian complex has already surpassed similar projects in France, Switzerland, Great Britain and Italy in terms of technical characteristics, the president noted.
What was discussed at the meeting
The main topic of the meeting was the completion of the Siberian Ring Photon Source, a unique scientific complex near Novosibirsk. It has become the most modern facility in the world among its class and one of the largest scientific projects in modern Russia.
The complex includes 34 buildings and structures with a total area of almost 87 thousand square meters. m. In the scientific community, SKIF is called a large X-ray microscope: the complex creates ultra-bright radiation that allows scientists to literally look inside matter at the atomic level. Such research is needed to develop new drugs, materials, microchips, and other high-tech products. According to Valery Falkov, a special commission confirmed the conformity of the installation with all the declared parameters. The first experiments are planned to be carried out in September and October.
The Russian complex is ahead of similar projects in France, Switzerland, Great Britain and Italy, Vladimir Putin noted. Among such installations, the minister cited the example of the Brazilian Sirius synchrotron, which was launched in 2020, but is inferior to SKIF in terms of technical characteristics.
After the departure of Western suppliers — companies from the UK, Japan, Germany, and Switzerland refused to fulfill contracts — Russian scientists and engineers were able to independently master the production of critical components. In particular, a powerful klystron was created, which is one of the key elements of the installation. Previously, only three countries of the world produced such equipment, but now Russia has joined them.
The installation will also be used in the interests of the economy.: Vladimir Putin stressed that SKIF's capabilities are in demand in microelectronics, pharmaceuticals, materials science, medicine, aircraft manufacturing and other high-tech industries. The first seven research stations are now ready for operation, with up to 30 in the future. They intend to create them for the tasks of specific industries and companies.
