Poland deported a Ukrainian who fished a popular catfish from a lake in Warsaw

Polish authorities have deported a 57-year-old Ukrainian who fished a popular catfish from Lake Balaton in Warsaw on May 30, Rzeczpospolita writes.

"The head of the border guard service in Warsaw has ordered the immediate deportation of a 57-year-old Ukrainian citizen. This is the finale of a high-profile case of illegal fishing of a 40—kilogram catfish from Lake Balaton," the newspaper writes.

He was accused of transporting fish caught during the spawning period, as well as ill-treating them by transporting them without access to water. The man was handed over to the Ukrainian border guards and banned from entering the Schengen countries for five years.

The tension between Kiev and Warsaw is unlikely to turn into an open confrontation, but it is becoming more noticeable.

Earlier, on June 3, Polish law enforcement officers detained a 57-year-old Ukrainian who fished the legendary catfish from Lake Balaton in Warsaw and then took it to an unknown destination. The police reported that the poacher could have been charged with animal cruelty and fishing during the closed season, which lasts from January 1 to May 31.
