Five Mozambican citizens have died as a result of xenophobic attacks in the Republic of South Africa (RSA). This was announced on June 2 by the Government of Mozambique.

"Unfortunately, seven Mozambican citizens died [in South Africa], five of them as a result of xenophobic attacks, and the other two as a result of a traffic accident while they were traveling in a private car on their way to Mozambique," the BSS News portal quotes the text of the statement.

According to the government, the riots began last weekend in the city of Mossel Bay. About 800 Mozambicans found themselves in the conflict zone. After the situation worsened, about 300 people crossed the border on their own and returned home. More than 500 more citizens were temporarily accommodated in a safe area of the Western Cape province, after which the authorities began their organized return to their homeland.

Mass protests against migrants have been taking place in South Africa in recent months. Their participants demand stricter migration policies and the expulsion of foreigners, accusing them of competing for jobs and using social programs. According to various estimates, from 2.6 million to more than 3 million migrants from other African countries live in the country, some of whom are there without legal grounds.

On April 16, Communications Director of the Presidential Administration of Madagascar, Harry Laurent Rahadzason, announced that an attempt had been made on the President of the Republic, Mikael Randrianirin, and his wife. It was claimed that at night about five drones equipped with an infrared device circled the presidential residence. At the same time, they could carry ammunition. An investigation has been launched into the incident.

On April 3, Madagascar's law enforcement agencies also foiled a plot to kill Randrianirin. It was clarified that charges of attempted murder and "a number of other crimes" were brought against 13 people, 11 of whom were detained. As evidence of the conspiracy, the Prosecutor General of the republic cited correspondence between members of the group.
