A new species of bird-like dinosaurs has been discovered in Argentina.
In the Argentine province of Santa Cruz, paleontologists from Argentina and Japan have discovered fossils of a previously unknown predatory dinosaur that lived about 66 million years ago. This was announced on May 29 by the Infobae Internet portal.
Being clarified. that the predator was named Kank australis. It belongs to the family of Unenlagia, whose representatives were anatomically close to birds. The weight of the ancient lizard was about 27 kg. Its distinctive features are conical teeth and characteristic raised claws on its feet, which sets it apart from the related velociraptors that lived in the Northern Hemisphere. The researchers borrowed the name of the species from the mythology of the Tehuelche Indians.
"The description of Kank australis is important for several reasons. First of all, we are adding a new species of dinosaur, unenlagia, a family that is poorly represented in the paleontological database, since their bones are very delicate and fragile, which makes their preservation difficult," the portal quotes one of the authors of the study, Mathias Motta.
The results of the scientific work are published in the Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology. According to experts, the find confirms the existence of a link between the ancient fauna of Patagonia and Antarctica, where researchers had previously also recorded traces of representatives of the Unenlagia family.
Science Daily reported on May 12 that paleontologists have described a new species of giant dinosaur, Bicharracosaurus dionidei. The length of the animal was about 20 m. The researchers found parts of the spine — more than 30 vertebrae of the neck, back and tail, several ribs and a fragment of the pelvis. The structure of the bones indicates that the remains belonged to an adult individual who lived about 155 million years ago on Gondwana, an ancient southern supercontinent.
