The increase in the number of mental disorders cannot be explained by one reason, as it involves several factors. Ruslan Isaev, a psychiatrist and Candidate of Medical Sciences, told Izvestia about this on May 29.

"The increase in statistics is influenced by improved diagnostics, a decrease in stigma (social disapproval of patients of this profile), an increase in referrals, as well as an increase in the psycho—emotional burden on the population," the source explained.

As the expert noted, many anxiety and depressive states did not come to the attention of medicine at all 20-30 years ago.

"A person could live for years with severe anxiety, insomnia, panic attacks or depression and not see a doctor. Now people are ready to discuss their condition with specialists," he said.

However, there is reason to talk about a real increase in the mental burden on the population. Modern man, according to Isaev, lives in conditions of constant information stimulation, social competition, economic instability and an almost continuous stream of disturbing content. The COVID-19 pandemic has also influenced the growth of anxiety and depressive disorders worldwide.
