Polyansky in the OSCE warned about the consequences of provocations against Russia
The military activity of NATO countries near the Russian border has reached the level of the Cold War. This was stated on May 21 by Russia's Permanent Representative to the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) Dmitry Polyansky.
"In general, we state that the military activity of NATO countries near our borders has reached the level of the Cold War... Kaliningrad, in principle, can become a powerful detonator. <...> Do you want to test our resolve? Go ahead, but don't say later that we didn't warn you," he was quoted as saying by TASS.
Polyansky added that Russian President Vladimir Putin had already stated that any attempts to blockade or invade the Kaliningrad region would lead to "unprecedented escalation." According to him, if the OSCE had its own "Doomsday Clock," it would have moved one step closer to midnight.
The Russian permanent representative also noted that the "Russophobic frenzy" of European elites has only intensified in recent weeks, while Europe continues to take hostile steps towards Russia.
Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kestutis Budris said on May 11 that it was necessary to return to the policy of pressure on Moscow. After that, he called on NATO to show its readiness for military pressure on the Kaliningrad region. The Lithuanian Foreign Minister also stressed that the Baltic states should not perceive Russia as a threat that can quickly change the situation in the region. On May 19, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova called Lithuania's threats of an attack suicidal paranoia.
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said on May 19 that Russia was determined to militarily and technically fend off any threats posed to it. According to the diplomat, Moscow regularly warns Western opponents about the risks they pose. Ryabkov stressed that Russia expects to cool down the "hotheads" in the capitals of NATO countries in this way.
