Prayers for Trinity-2026: what to read to believers in church and at home
Holy Trinity Day, or Pentecost, is one of the main Orthodox holidays, which is celebrated on the 50th day after Easter. On this day, the Church commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles, one of the key events in Christian history. According to the Gospel, Christ promised His disciples to send "another Comforter," and Pentecost was the fulfillment of this promise. For more information about the meaning and main prayers of the holiday, see the Izvestia article.
Who is the Holy Spirit
The Church's opinion on the nature of the Holy Spirit was finally formulated in the era of the Second Ecumenical Council (381) in a polemic with the so-called Doukhobors. According to him, the Holy Spirit is not an impersonal force or energy, but a Divine Person (Hypostasis) possessing all the fullness of Divine dignity on an equal basis with the Father and Son, the rector of the church of the Apostle and Evangelist Luke in Tver (known in social networks as the "Positive Father") Anthony Rusakevich told Izvestia.
The Holy Spirit works in unity with other Persons of the Holy Trinity, which is reflected in the narrative of His descent on the apostles. In the book of Acts of the Apostles, this event is described as follows: the disciples of Christ, gathered in the upper room of Zion, suddenly heard a noise resembling a strong wind, and saw fiery tongues that descended on each of them. After that, they were filled with the Holy Spirit and began praising God in various languages they had not known before.
"In the event of Pentecost, the concordant action of the Holy Trinity was visibly manifested in the form of fiery tongues, and not the emanation of some abstract energy,— Father Anthony emphasized.
He recalled that such authoritative interpreters as John Chrysostom and Aurelius Augustine believed that in the Upper Room of Zion the grace of the Holy Spirit descended not only on the 12 apostles, but also on all 120 believers who were there.
In the New Testament tradition, the gift of the Holy Spirit is given to every believer through the sacraments of the church, in particular, chrismation, which is usually performed with holy baptism. The priest anoints the parts of the baby's body (forehead, eyes, nostrils, mouth, ears, chest, arms, legs) with holy Myrrh, while pronouncing the words: "The seal of the gift of the Holy Spirit."
Thus, every believer in his life receives through the sacrament the same gift that the apostles received on the day of the Holy Trinity.
Who should I pray to on the Orthodox holiday of May 31, 2026
In their prayers on this day, believers turn to the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit as the three Persons of the Holy Trinity who are in unity.
On Pentecost, for the first time after Easter, the prayer "To the King of Heaven" addressed to the Holy Spirit is read and repeated at the divine service (see its text below).
After the Divine Liturgy, Great Vespers is celebrated in churches with the singing of stichera glorifying the Holy Spirit. The Church prays to Him for the transformation of man and the whole world: for the purification from sins, the granting of spiritual fruits, inner renewal and reconciliation of people with God.
Prayer to the Holy Spirit
"To the Heavenly King, the Comforter, the Soul of truth, Who art everywhere and fills everything, the Treasure of goodness and the Giver of life, come and dwell in us, and cleanse us from all defilement, and save our souls, O Blessed One."
It translates as: "Heavenly King, Comforter, Spirit of Truth, omnipresent and filling the whole world, Source of goodness and Giver of life, come and dwell in us and cleanse us from all sin and save our souls, O Good One."
Kneeling prayers for Trinity
On Trinity Day, a special service is held in Orthodox churches — Vespers with the reading of kneeling prayers, the authorship of which, according to Legend, belongs to St. Basil the Great.
These prayers are recited once a year. They contain petitions for the mercy of God, the sending down of the Holy Spirit, and the repose of the dead.
Vespers with kneeling prayers is considered one of the main spiritual culminations of Pentecost. This "interesting liturgical moment," according to Fr Anthony, "should be witnessed by every Orthodox believer."
During the entire 50-day Easter period, prostrations and kneeling prayers were not performed as a sign of joy at the Resurrection of Christ. Pentecost ends this period, marking the return to repentance before God, but in a new capacity, in a state of newfound grace of the Holy Spirit.
"This action symbolizes the humility of man and all creation before the Comforter, sent down to sanctify, strengthen and intercede for the weak human race," the priest noted.
What do they pray for on Whitsunday?
According to Father Anthony, kneeling prayers are the focus of the main prayer content of the holiday, as they are associated with the purification and sanctification of human nature. In the church tradition, the descent of the Holy Spirit in the form of fiery tongues symbolizes the cleansing power of Divine grace, which frees a person from sin and grants new life.
The second important theme of prayer is unity and reconciliation. Pentecost is seen as the opposite of the Babel of Babel: if, according to the Bible, the mixing of languages led to the separation of nations, then the descent of the Holy Spirit, on the contrary, became a symbol of their spiritual unification. Therefore, on this day, churches especially pray for peace, harmony and unity of the Church.
The third emphasis is on enlightenment and knowledge of the truth.
"Here, the gift of the Spirit is contrasted with intoxication with sensual wine and is understood as the "sweet drink of piety," in the words of St. Gregory of Nyssa, which enlightens the mind and warms the heart with Divine love," the Izvestia interlocutor noted.
A short prayer to the Holy Trinity
"Holy Trinity, have mercy on us; Lord, cleanse our sins; Master, forgive our iniquities; Holy One, visit and heal our infirmities, for Thy name's sake. Lord, have mercy" (read three times)
How to behave in the temple on the feast of Pentecost
The behavior in the temple on this day is dictated by the joyful nature of the celebration. Ancient canonical sources prescribe spending the time of Pentecost in joy, incompatible with fasting and prostration, right up to Vespers.
The temple on this day is richly decorated with greenery, branches and flowers. This decoration symbolizes the life and renewal of the world under the influence of the Life-giving Spirit. This tradition also recalls the Old Testament roots of the celebration. In ancient Israel, Pentecost (celebrated 50 days after Easter) was an agricultural harvest festival when the "firstfruits" of the harvest were brought to God.
Is it possible to pray at home
Home prayer on the day of Pentecost is not canceled, but the Orthodox tradition emphasizes the importance of common, conciliar prayer. According to the Book of Acts of the Apostles, the Holy Spirit descended upon the disciples of Christ at the moment when they were "with one accord together" (Acts 1:16). 2:1). That is why Pentecost is called the birthday of the Christian Church. St. John Chrysostom also noted that the Holy Spirit descended upon the apostles when they were in prayer together.
Home prayer on this day is considered as a continuation of temple worship. In the Russian Orthodox tradition, the reading of the canon to the Holy Spirit, which is contained in liturgical books, is sometimes added to the prayer rule at home.
