Trinity Ecumenical Parents' Saturday is the day of universal commemoration of the deceased, which in 2026 falls on May 30. Parents' Saturday before Trinity-2026
In terms of worship, Trinity Parental Saturday does not differ from other parental Saturdays — they are celebrated according to the same rite, Vladislav Beregovoy, head of the missionary department of the Pesochenskaya diocese, told Izvestia. However, this day has its own peculiarity: believers prayerfully remember not only their deceased relatives. At the Divine Liturgy, prayers are offered for the health of the living and for the repose of all Orthodox Christians.
— One of the main motives for prayer for the dead are the words of Christ: "God is not the God of the dead, but of the living, for with Him all are alive." We believe that the souls of the deceased continue to live in eternity, awaiting the resurrection of their bodies after the Second Coming. Therefore, every time before important church holidays, we remember not only ourselves, but also those who are no longer with us," said the priest.

Beregovoy added that for a person who regularly visits a church, there is no fundamental difference on which Saturday to come — this day is chosen by Christians for prayers of repose. For those who rarely visit the temple, days like Trinity Parents' Saturday become a reminder to come and pray for their deceased relatives at least once a year.
How to properly commemorate the dead on this day
On Trinity Parents' Saturday, the Divine Liturgy and the funeral service are celebrated in churches. During the Liturgy, the faithful present notes with the names of the baptized deceased, who are commemorated in common prayer.
The priest removes the particles from the prosphora, a special liturgical bread, saying "Remember, O Lord, Thy departed servant" or "Thy maidservant," after which he reads out the names indicated in the notes. You can serve them at the church shop before the service or the day before.
At the end of the Liturgy, the priest drops the removed particles into the Holy Chalice with the Body and Blood of Christ and prays for the forgiveness of the sins of the deceased. Believers are also encouraged on this day to partake of the Holy Mysteries of Christ themselves — that is, to confess and receive communion.
At the memorial service, they pray for the repose of the dead, ask God for mercy to them and forgiveness of their sins. The service is held before the eve — a special table with a crucifix and candlesticks, where you can put a candle. Here you can also leave food or donations for the needs of the temple in memory of the deceased.
In addition, on parental Saturday, it is customary to give alms with a request to pray for relatives and friends.
Is it possible to commemorate suicides on Trinity Saturday
On this day, churches pray for all Orthodox dead, including those whom the Church calls "held in hell." This is probably what gave rise to the widespread popular superstition that Trinity Parents' Saturday is the only day of the year when suicides can be commemorated.
— For decades now, priests have had to say that this is absolute nonsense. There is no need to write the names of relatives in notes on this day, "who died on their own accord," Father Vladislav said.
Nevertheless, according to him, this practice is still found in remote villages.
— It's not that it's a big problem, the Lord himself will figure out who the priests can remember and who they can't. However, there are church canons and church discipline, and anyone who, contrary to warnings, writes [the names of] suicides will commit a serious sin," Father Vladislav noted, urging "not to try to enter the Kingdom of God through the back door or by kicking the door down."
He advised the relatives of the suicides to contact the diocese, where in some cases, after explaining the situation, they can obtain permission for a funeral service.
— The church allows funeral services for suicides who were registered with a psychiatrist. It also allows funeral services for suicidal teenagers who committed suicide as a result of demonic social engineering. When the child was pushed to this by adult inhumans," the priest noted.
In such cases, relatives can sing a funeral service for a loved one and later commemorate him in the temple. In other situations, the "rite of prayerful consolation of relatives of the deceased is performed" — a special prayer service for the comfort of loved ones, however, such deceased are not commemorated at divine services.
At the same time, a ban on commemoration in notes at the Liturgy does not mean a ban on prayer in general.
— There is a prayer by St. Leo of Optina, which can be read with the blessing of the priest. The main thing is that the loved ones of such people themselves live righteously. So that their righteousness and holiness could cover those whose afterlife is not going as well as they would like," concluded Father Vladislav.
How to behave in a cemetery
If a person attended a service on Trinity Parents' Saturday, then he has "practically nothing to do at the cemetery," the Izvestia interlocutor noted. In the Orthodox tradition, funeral services in the church occupy a more significant place in the hierarchy of prayer activities than visiting the grave.
— If possible, it would be good to invite a priest to perform a memorial service at the cemetery, but this is a rather rare practice, because priests are usually very busy these days, — said Father Vladislav.
Also, according to him, you can independently read the Litany of the Deceased in the editorial office for the laity or the Psalter. The main thing is not to turn the grave into a picnic area and not to arrange "some kind of pagan rituals" on it.
What not to do on Trinity Parents' Saturday
There are no church prohibitions specifically for Trinity Saturday.
— In principle, as on any day, you don't have to "eat each other's brains", you don't have to commit any shameful sins, - said Father Vladislav. He called on the faithful to attend the Liturgy on Trinity Saturday, if possible, to receive Communion and pray at the divine service for their deceased relatives.
Is it possible to pray for the dead at home
According to the priest, you can pray anywhere, as many people work on Trinity Saturday or stay at home with their children and cannot visit either the temple or the cemetery. In this case, you can independently read the Litany of the Deceased in the editorial office for the laity or a short prayer for the deceased, which is contained in each prayer book at the end of morning prayers.
