- A stylist and a psychologist explained the influence of clothing trends on behavior and self-esteem
Fashion today goes far beyond clothing and becomes an instrument of cultural identity and self-presentation, experts noted. It forms not only an external image, but also behavioral patterns, lifestyle, and even a value system. Experts explained why modern aesthetics are spreading so fast and how social networks are changing the perception of style. All the details are in the Izvestia article.
How fashion became a cultural identity system
As Anna Skorokhodova, stylist, accessories designer and founder of the by SKOROKHODOVA brand, told Izvestia, modern fashion has ceased to be exclusively a clothing industry. According to her, today the style acts as a way of demonstrating belonging to a certain social and value group.
The expert notes that aesthetics like Clean Girl, Quiet Luxury and others form a ready-made identity model for a person. At the same time, she emphasizes, the basic logic of fashion has not changed — only the forms of expression have changed.
"The basic logic of fashion as a whole has remained the same, only the forms of its manifestation have changed. Society has always used visual codes as a way of indicating membership in a particular group. If protest subcultures - goths, emo, punks, grunge - were the most prominent in the 2000s and early 2010s, today the nature of this protest has become more calm and socially acceptable. He lost his demonstrative conflict and became closer to the norm. Previously, subcultures emphasized their opposition to society through music, bright makeup, non-standard clothing and lifestyle. Today, new aesthetics are being integrated into everyday life much more softly and imperceptibly," explained Skorokhodova.
From subcultures to social media algorithms
It is reported that modern fashion trends shape not only the appearance, but also the idea of the norm. According to Skorokhodova, social media algorithms enhance this process by offering the user ready-made visual scenarios of life. In addition, fashion is increasingly associated not only with clothes, but also with nutrition, sports, psychological state and habits. As a result, a person "wears" not only a style, but also a way of life.
This leads to a paradox: with declared individuality, visual unification occurs. The user finds himself constantly comparing himself with idealized images from the recommendation feed.
Why "quiet luxury" is becoming the norm
The designer paid special attention to the phenomenon of "quiet luxury" and other popular trends. According to the expert, such styles often romanticize a certain lifestyle that is accessible to a limited circle of people.
"Clean Girl's aesthetics create the illusion of naturalness, which in practice requires significant resources, time, and care. This creates high expectations and affects self-esteem. At the same time, wellness aesthetics transforms a healthy lifestyle into a social status marker, which increases pressure on a person," Skorokhodova said.
The psychological effect of fashion trends
As psychologist Natalia Kucheryavaya explained to Izvestia, fashion performs the function of social affiliation. From an evolutionary point of view, a person tends to be part of a group because it is associated with a sense of security.
"How much a person will experience this depends on the habit of comparing themselves with others. Social media increases anxiety because people constantly see other people's successes, appearance and style as if this were the norm. This has a particularly strong effect on the younger audience, for whom social approval is often of great importance," the specialist explained.
According to her, the fear of "not being on trend" can be seen as a form of social anxiety, reinforced by social media. Constantly comparing oneself to others lowers self-esteem and can lead to emotional stress.
In addition, the psychologist noted that excessive focus on trends can weaken contact with one's own desires and form dependence on external evaluation.
Fashion between unification and individuality
Experts agree that modern fashion is in a transitional phase. On the one hand, trends are spreading faster than ever, and on the other, the demand for individuality and authenticity is growing. In the coming years, a return to a personal style and more conscious self-expression will be a key focus. This can change the balance between mass aesthetics and individual visual identity.
