Many tick remedies require special handling conditions, which can inadvertently poison a pet. Grigory Balagurov, head of the Law and Health Food and Packaging Quality Protection Fund, warned about this on Thursday, May 7. He mentioned common mistakes in the use of drugs.

He noted that drops are very popular among anti-mite products.

"However, they should not be applied to the coat, but directly to the pet's skin, and specifically in the withers and behind the ears, because animals can get poisoned by licking the drops. If you have several pets, it is important to make sure that they do not lick each other, or choose another remedy," the expert said in an interview with Lenta.Ru .

He added that the drops should not be applied immediately after washing the pet. It is better to do this in 2-3 days, when the fat layer where the drug accumulates is restored.

The expert noted that special anti-mite collars are water-resistant and provide protection from parasites for several months, but they work if they fit snugly to the skin.

"For this reason, they are virtually useless for long—haired breeds," Balagurov said.

He added that such products should be worn all the time, not only during walks, making exceptions for water procedures.

"In any case, do not allow your pet to chew on the collar — it can swallow the active substance, and it, as in the case of drops or sprays, can lead to poisoning," the specialist warned.

According to Balagurov, it is also possible to combine different anti—tick drugs, such as pills and collars. But in this case, care should be taken, because if the same active ingredients are used in the composition, it can cause the pet to overdose, he stressed.

Earlier, on May 5, the president of the Russian Cynological Federation, Vladimir Golubev, warned in an interview with RT that some popular methods of removing ticks, including the use of sunflower oil and cauterization, can be dangerous.

He noted that there should be a special ticker in the house. In addition, before proceeding with the procedure, it is necessary to wear gloves, as the parasite can be a carrier of infections. 360.ru .

It is necessary to prepare an antiseptic for the treatment of the bite site. The tick should be gripped with a special tool as close to the skin as possible and gently rotated until it detaches, he added.

Olga Skudareva, head of the Department of Biological Safety and Sanitary Protection of the territory of the Department of Epidemiological Welfare of the Population of Rospotrebnadzor, dispelled the myth of a popular method of tick removal at the Izvestia News Center on April 30. The expert noted that improper removal can cause part of the tick to remain in the skin. So, if you tear off the head, it can remain inside, namely in the mouth there are salivary glands that carry the infection.
