The Russian government has approved a draft joint program with Belarus aimed at mitigating damage from the Chernobyl nuclear power Plant (NPP) accident. This follows from the decree of May 4 published on the official Internet portal of legal information.

"To approve the draft program of joint activities of Belarus and Russia within the framework of the Union State to overcome the negative consequences of the Chernobyl disaster, submitted by the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations and coordinated with interested federal executive authorities and the Belarusian side," the document says.

The document was signed by Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin.

A commemorative march to mark the 40th anniversary of the Chernobyl accident took place on April 26 at the Mitinsky Cemetery in Moscow. Participants laid flowers on the Walk of Fame, where 28 firefighters who participated in the aftermath are buried.

On April 20, Russian President Vladimir Putin noted the courage of the heroes who dealt with the consequences of the Chernobyl disaster. According to the head of state, Russia has taken measures for social protection and rehabilitation of victims of the disaster. The President also expressed gratitude to the representatives of the Chernobyl Union and other public organizations for their assistance in the implementation of these programs.
