Romanian Parliament dismisses Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan
The Romanian parliament has dismissed the government of Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan following a vote of no confidence. This was reported by the Reuters news agency on May 5.
Bolozhan has been heading a minority government since the end of April, when the Social Democrats, the largest party in parliament, demanded his resignation, and then withdrew from the four-party pro—European coalition and joined forces with the far—right opposition to pass a vote of no confidence.
The authors of the article emphasized that the Social Democrats have repeatedly come into conflict with Bolozhan, as his austerity measures have hit their voters and patron networks, while their support from the population has shifted to the extreme right.
Centrist President Nikushor Dan, who is nominating the prime minister, is expected to call on the parties to negotiate and try to restore a four-party pro-European coalition led by another candidate for the post of prime minister.
Romanian Defense Minister Radu Miratu announced on April 29 that the Romanian parliament had approved defense contracts worth €8.33 billion under the pan-European Security Actions for Europe (SAFE) program. It is noted that the financing of the program was under threat amid the political crisis following the withdrawal of the Social Democratic Party from the ruling coalition.
