- The media reported on the judge's apology to the accused of attempting to assassinate Trump
Judge Zia Farooqi has apologized to Cole Allen, accused of attempting to assassinate US President Donald Trump due to prison conditions. This was announced on May 4 by Mike Emanuel, a Fox News channel journalist.
Judge Zia Farooqi told the lawyer representing the Department of Corrections (DOC) that he was "amazed and concerned" by the treatment of Allen in prison. Allen was placed under surveillance due to the risk of suicide during his incarceration," the publication says.
It is clarified that at the end of the meeting, the judge expressed serious concern about a possible violation of Allen's rights. He noted that the accused was denied access to a Bible and his meetings with lawyers were limited.
In addition, according to the TV channel, the accused was kept in a closed cell without windows and deprived of the opportunity to go out for walks every day. At the same time, the prosecution explained the need for such a regime with statements by the defendant himself.
The journalist noted that the prosecution indicated that on the night of the attack at the White House Correspondents' Association dinner, Allen told FBI agents that he "did not expect to survive" during a trip to Washington to carry out an assassination attempt on Trump.
As a result, the judge demanded that the U.S. Department of Corrections provide a detailed report by the next morning on where and in what conditions the accused would be held.
CNN reported on April 27 that the shooter at the reception with the participation of the US president was charged with the attempted assassination of the American leader, and he faces life in prison. The 31-year-old man appeared before the federal court for the first time on April 27. Investigators are examining a message that the suspect sent to his family after he was arrested: in it, he expressed anger at the administration, ridiculed the Secret Service for weak security at the hotel and said he was not "waiting for a pardon."
Trump and his wife Melania were evacuated from the White House Correspondents' Association dinner on April 25 after the sounds of gunfire. Later, the American leader announced that the shooter had been detained. The federal prosecutor in Washington, Jeanine Pirro, reported that the detainee after the shooting will appear in court on Monday, April 27.
