The level of aggression in American politics continues to grow and increasingly goes beyond verbal conflicts. The shooting at the White House Correspondents' Association dinner at the Washington Hilton Hotel has once again highlighted one of the main problems of modern America — the rise of political violence. During the event, where government officials and leading journalists of the country traditionally gather, shots were fired, after which Donald Trump and other high-ranking guests were urgently evacuated. The attacker was promptly detained, and one Secret Service officer was injured, but there were no casualties among the evening's participants. About what the next opponent of the head of the White House was trying to achieve and whether it is worth looking for a pattern in what happened - in the Izvestia material.

Was Donald Trump the target of the attacker

The incident occurred on April 25 in the evening during a gala dinner, which traditionally gathers journalists covering the activities of the White House, representatives of the administration and the political elite. According to the American media, the shots were fired around 20:30 — shortly after the start of the event. At that moment, the US president was at the main table.

After the first sounds of gunfire, Secret Service officers burst into the hall and an urgent evacuation began. Donald Trump, the country's first lady Melania Trump, as well as Vice President J.D. Vance were promptly escorted off the stage. Many of the guests lay down on the floor and hid under the tables, waiting for instructions from the security services.

According to law enforcement agencies, an armed man tried to break through a checkpoint in the lobby of the hotel. In response, the security guards opened fire. The attacker was apprehended within a few seconds. According to the investigation, he turned out to be 31-year-old California resident Cole Thomas Allen from Torrance, who worked as a teacher.

According to media reports, the suspect was carrying a shotgun, a pistol and several knives. It was also established that he was a hotel guest, which could have made it easier for him to access the building. So far, the investigation is considering the version according to which the man acted alone.

As a result of the incident, one of the Secret Service officers received a gunshot wound, but the bulletproof vest prevented serious consequences. His condition is assessed as stable, there is no threat to his life. The suspect himself was also taken to the hospital.

According to CBS, after the arrest, the man stated that he intended to open fire on Trump administration officials. Washington Federal Prosecutor Jeanine Pirro said the suspect would appear in court on April 27.

Later, at a briefing at the White House, the US president said that, in his opinion, the attacker was a "loner" and a "mentally unstable person." He also noted the operational actions of the Secret Service, thanks to which it was possible to avoid casualties among the participants of the event.

At the same time, the incident raised questions about the level of security at such events. According to some guests, access to the hotel complex that evening could be relatively free: to enter individual events inside the building, it was enough to present an invitation, and control was not always strict.

As Pavel Sharikov, an expert on the United States and a researcher at the European Integration Research Department of the Institute of Europe of the Russian Academy of Sciences, noted in an interview with Izvestia, at the moment it is premature to draw final conclusions about the motives of the attacker, since there are no details of the investigation and the testimony of the detainee himself. According to him, so far the situation looks like the actions of "another urban lunatic," however, more accurate estimates can be given only after the appearance of court materials and official data from law enforcement agencies.

Indeed, American analysts point to alarming trends in the mental health of the population. According to estimates by the non-profit organization Mental Health America, in 2022 about 20% of US residents had mental disorders, and by 2024 this figure has grown to 23%. The number of suicides is also increasing in the country: according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in 2022 alone, about 50,000 people committed suicide in the country, making suicide one of the leading causes of death.

The rise of political violence in the United States

The shooting at the Washington Hilton was another episode in a series of cases of politically motivated violence in the United States. In recent years, such incidents have been occurring more frequently and affect representatives of various political forces. Donald Trump himself had previously survived an assassination attempt during an election rally in Pennsylvania when a bullet grazed his ear. A few months later, law enforcement officers prevented another attempted attack near his golf club in Florida.

A separate shock to American society was the murder of conservative activist Charlie Kirk in September 2025. He was a well-known figure, especially among the youth.

Attacks on politicians at the state level have also been recorded in the country. So, in Minnesota, a representative of the Democratic Party was killed along with her husband, and in Pennsylvania, the house of Governor Josh Shapiro was set on fire when he was inside with his family. These cases, along with other incidents, indicate an increase in tension in society.

Increased political polarization, radicalization of rhetoric, and the spread of extremist views on social media are contributing to the increase in violence. Opponents are increasingly perceived not as political competitors, but as enemies, which creates a favorable environment for aggressive actions.

Sergei Lebedev, a researcher at the Institute of World Military Economics and Strategy at the National Research University Higher School of Economics, believes that one of the key reasons for the increase in political violence in the United States is related to the Second Amendment to the constitution, which enshrines the right of citizens to bear arms. According to him, it is precisely because of this that the United States ranks first in the world in terms of the number of civilian weapons per capita, which objectively increases the risks: people with radical views or mentally unstable inevitably turn out to be among the owners.

The expert calls the increasing political polarization in American society the second factor. We are talking about the growing confrontation between the left-liberal camp and the right-wing conservatives, which is increasingly moving beyond the framework of political discussion and moving into the plane of mutual demonization of opponents.

He noted that the repeal of the second Amendment is unlikely in the foreseeable future, including due to the influence of the powerful gun lobby, primarily the National Rifle Association (NRA). In the context of continued political polarization, this means that such incidents, in his opinion, may be repetitive.

Such incidents have a long-term impact on the political system. In addition to directly harming victims and their families, they undermine trust in government institutions, reduce citizens' willingness to participate in public life, and increase an atmosphere of fear. As a result, key elements of the democratic process suffer, from freedom of expression to participation in elections.

The incident in the center of Washington, at an event symbolizing the interaction of government and the press, once again demonstrated that even the most secure sites are not immune from violence. And this, according to many experts, reflects a deeper crisis that American society has yet to deal with.

Of course, the shooting at the Correspondents' Association dinner corresponds to the general trends in the development of American statehood, said Oleg Karpovich, Head of the Department of the MGIMO Diplomatic Academy of the Russian Foreign Ministry.

– Security in the United States has been seriously deteriorating for many decades. Outbreaks of political and domestic violence have become the norm. Trump's opponents, as you know, have repeatedly called for his physical elimination," he told Izvestia.

However, the Trumpists are not very peaceful either. At the same time, Trump's foreign policy adventures only add fuel to the fire. And so far, there are no politicians capable of overcoming these crisis trends. On the contrary, Oleg Karpovich summarized, there is only a noticeable course towards further polarization, from which the American society does not want to turn off.
