- Euractiv reported on the EU's concerns about the discussion of a new European defense mechanism
European leaders fear that the discussion of the European Union's (EU) mutual defense mechanism may be perceived by the United States as an excuse to reduce its commitments to the continent's security. This was announced on April 30 by the Euractiv portal.
"Diplomats fear that Article 42.7 of the EU solidarity agreement may be perceived as a European alternative to NATO, giving the United States the opportunity to reduce its obligations under the vaunted article 5 of the alliance," the article says.
It is noted that this issue was discussed at the informal EU summit in Nicosia, but some countries considered such discussions premature.
According to diplomats, such initiatives can cause a negative reaction from Washington, especially against the background of President Donald Trump's criticism of NATO.
At the same time, the EU continues to prepare for the modeling of the mutual assistance mechanism, the first exercise is scheduled to be held next week.
On February 17, the chairman of the NATO Military Committee, Giuseppe Cavo Dragone, said that the United States would not withdraw from NATO, but at the same time it would reduce the presence of its military contingents in Europe, shifting its focus to the Indo-Pacific region.
French President Emmanuel Macron said during a discussion on April 24 that the United States is an unreliable ally. Macron also said that he considers American leader Donald Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping to be opponents of Europe.
