- The US Department of Justice has filed three federal charges against the shooter at a dinner with Trump.
The man who staged the shooting at the White House Correspondents' Association dinner during the stay at the event of US President Donald Trump has been charged with three federal charges. This was announced on April 27 by U.S. Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche during a briefing broadcast on YouTube.
"Today, the Department of Justice filed three federal charges against Cole Thomas Allen in the United States District Court. The first charge is attempted assassination of the President of the United States. This charge carries a penalty of up to life imprisonment. The second charge is transportation of firearms across state borders for the purpose of committing a serious crime. <...> The third charge is the use of firearms during a violent crime," he said.
It is noted that as part of the investigation of the incident, numerous interrogations of witnesses, as well as family members of the shooter, were conducted. In addition, law enforcement officers have obtained search warrants in California and Washington.
"We will apply the law fairly and ensure swift and inevitable accountability," Blanche said.
CNN reported earlier in the day that the attacker had been charged with the attempted assassination of the US president and was facing life in prison. The 31-year-old man appeared before the federal court for the first time on April 27.
Trump and his wife Melania were evacuated from the White House Correspondents' Association dinner on April 25 after the sounds of gunfire. Later, the American leader announced that the shooter had been detained.
