- The Guardian learned about Britain's plan to use a "trade bazooka" against the United States
British businessmen are thinking about taking measures similar to the "trade bazooka" of the European Union (EU) against US tariffs. This was reported by The Guardian newspaper on April 26.
"In a report containing recommendations to prevent a decline in the UK's competitiveness in an increasingly unstable world, the British Chamber of Commerce (BCC) stated the need to take urgent measures to protect companies from punitive trade policies of other countries. One of the main priorities was the creation of a "trading bazooka" by the UK, the publication says.
According to the report, the UK government should give ministers a range of powers, from imposing duties on market access to increased controls on investments and subsidies. BBC Director General Shevon Havilland warned that the kingdom must be prepared for harsh measures amid global tensions.
The New York Times reported on April 20 that the administration of US President Donald Trump is beginning the procedure for refunding import duties worth more than $166 billion after the Supreme Court's decision. Only organizations that have officially paid the fees are eligible for a refund. The White House also declined to say whether it would try to go to court again to stop some or all of the refunds.
