A commemorative march to mark the 40th anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident took place on April 26 at the Mitinsky Cemetery in Moscow. Participants laid flowers on the Walk of Fame, where 28 firefighters who participated in the aftermath are buried.
The published footage shows the procession of the column to the memorial, the laying of flowers and the rite of worship.
"Feelings are mixed, of course. Our guys are lying here, I come here almost every year and remember. <...> We remember," said retired colonel of the internal service Alexander Gudkov.
The Chernobyl disaster occurred on April 26, 1986. It has had an impact on the health of thousands of people and even subsequent generations. In Russia, more than 59 thousand square kilometers of the territory of 14 subjects have been exposed to radioactive contamination.
On April 20, Russian President Vladimir Putin noted the courage of the heroes who dealt with the aftermath of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant disaster. According to the head of state, Russia has taken social protection and rehabilitation measures for victims of the disaster, and the president also expressed gratitude to representatives of the Chernobyl Union and other public organizations for their assistance in implementing these programs.
