Spring in Russia is traditionally full of weather surprises. At the end of April, residents of the capital region were surprised to see snowfall, and Siberians — a full-fledged snow cover. Izvestia found out whether such unstable weather will continue in May, what forecast has been prepared for Russians for the holiday weekend, and most importantly, whether it should be trusted.

Should Muscovites expect snow during the May holidays

During the May holidays, residents of Moscow and the Moscow region should not be afraid of surprises like the April snowfall, Alexander Shuvalov, head of the Meteo forecasting center, told Izvestia.

— The probability of such a scenario with snow is close to zero, — the meteorologist answered the relevant question. According to his forecast, the May holidays in central Russia will be dominated by moderately warm weather with temperatures of +10... +15 degrees.

"This is the most likely development of weather processes as of today," Shuvalov added, stressing that a more accurate forecast should be found out three days before the date of interest. In this case, it will be successful with a probability of 80%.

In general, the current spring in Russia with its "weather swings", according to Shuvalov, cannot be called abnormal.

— She, let's say, presents certain surprises. But these are surprises that are quite typical of the spring season, especially in April, where there is still a struggle between winter and spring," said the meteorologist.

The Yandex service.Weather" predicts rain in Moscow on May 1 and daytime temperatures no higher than + 9 degrees. In the future, it will gradually warm up, and on May 9, the air will warm up to +15 degrees.

When will the forecast be accurate?

The question of whether snow is possible during the May holidays is not an idle one for Russians, and especially for Muscovites. It is enough to recall last year, when on May 1 an abnormal snowfall began in Moscow and the Moscow region, which became a record for the last 116 years. On May 1-2, up to 70% of the monthly precipitation rate fell, provoking kilometers of traffic jams, train disruptions and other troubles.

Of course, residents of the capital want to understand whether something like this can happen again. But it is too early to demand an accurate forecast for the May holidays from weather forecasters, Evgeny Tishkovets, a leading specialist at the Phobos weather center, told Izvestia.

Commenting on the latest natural "vagaries" in the capital region, he noted that snow is expected on Friday, April 24, which will melt by Sunday, but then it may start again at the end of the month.

— This story will be until the end of April, — said Tishkovets.

According to him, it will be "cool" on May 1, but there is hope that Victory Day will be more comfortable.

— But these are all general phrases. It's premature to talk about what specific [weather] events and temperatures to expect," he stressed.

According to the meteorologist, the forecast for the May holidays, which can be used when planning holidays, can be viewed no earlier than five days before their start.

Weather for May 1 and Victory Day in St. Petersburg and Volgograd

Long—term forecasts in meteorology - for two weeks and a month ahead — are often inaccurate. This is due to the fact that weather processes are unstable, and the possibilities of modern forecasting methods are limited. Nevertheless, it can already be assumed that the cool weather in Central Russia will continue until the end of the month, and no noticeable warming should be expected in the first days of May.

In St. Petersburg, it will be slightly cooler during the holidays - +8 degrees on the afternoon of May 1 and up to +12 degrees on Victory Day. But on May 2 and 3, according to the forecast, it will be sunny and up to +15 degrees.

In Volgograd, the end of April and the first weekend of May promise to be warm and rainy. According to Gismeteo, starting from April 30, a noticeable increase in temperature is expected in the region, which will reach +21 degrees by the middle of the holidays. In the following days, the temperature will change slightly around this mark.

What will the beginning of May look like in other regions of Russia?

In Siberia, after the relatively warm third decade of April, the thermometer will decrease, and sunny days will be replaced by rains. In Novosibirsk, warm air flows from Northern Kazakhstan, the Southern Urals and Central Asia will bring real summer weather next weekend - up to +20 degrees, but by May 1 the sky will be overcast and it will become a little cooler. Gradually, the temperature will decrease and on May 9 it will reach +10 degrees.

Krasnoyarsk, where the April snowfalls will also be replaced by 20-degree heat in the near future, will "cool down" to +18 degrees by May 1 and up to +6 degrees by Victory Day. In the north of the region, in Norilsk, winter has not yet receded. Gismeteo predicts a steady "minus" for May — from -9 to -5 degrees. "Yandex. The weather" harbors a faint hope of +2 degrees by the middle of the month.

In Irkutsk, temperature fluctuations will not be so significant during the holidays — from +15 to +9 degrees.

The weather in the Far East is expected to be uneven: in Khabarovsk, the third decade of April turned out to be cold, and according to forecasters, heat is not expected until the end of the month. The beginning of May will also be cool. In Vladivostok, by the end of the holidays, the air will warm up to +17 degrees, but it will be quite wet — forecasters predict six rainy days.

There won't be any long vacations.

The southern regions of Russia, especially the Krasnodar Territory, will traditionally become one of the most comfortable places to stay in May 2026. It is expected that the average temperature here will be in the range of +16... +21 degrees. However, you can't count on long trips during the holidays. In 2026, Russians expect the shortest May weekend in the last eight years. They are divided into two blocks: first, from May 1 to May 3 (Friday to Sunday), and then from May 9 to May 11 (Saturday to Monday). There will be a full five-day working week between them. In previous years, May holidays often lasted seven days or more. In 2026, the reduction is due to the fact that additional weekends from the New Year holidays were not postponed to May.
