Tensions are rising in Europe, and "the smell of military confrontation with Russia is becoming more and more pronounced." This was stated in an interview with Izvestia by Vladimir Avatkov, Head of the Department of the Middle and Post-Soviet East of the INION RAS, Professor of the Department of International Relations and Foreign Policy at MGLU.

"The United States is gradually distancing itself from direct participation in European affairs, shifting responsibility to the European Union itself and trying to maintain the image of a party ready for negotiations. At the same time, European countries are actually merging their military structures with Ukraine, forming informal proto—alliances aimed at undermining Russian interests," the political scientist explained.

Against this background, the Americans continue to destroy global trade, he added. Washington continues to form artificial barriers, effectively dividing Europe and Asia into two parts and saying that trade can only be conducted through them, the source said.

"That's why the Panama Canal and Canada are so important to Americans, they want to lock everything absolutely on themselves. This is probably the only chance for the Americans to remain one of the key powers in the 21st century," the analyst concluded.
