- Vance announced significant progress in negotiations between the United States and Iran
Washington has made "significant progress" in negotiations with Iran, U.S. Vice President Jay Dee Vance said on April 13.
"I wouldn't say that everything went wrong. I also think that everything went well. We have made significant progress," Reuters quoted Vance as saying.
It was not possible to conclude a deal with the Islamic Republic because, as the American vice president stated, the Iranian negotiators could not reach a final agreement among themselves and that they had to return to Tehran, probably to get approval from the supreme leader.
At the same time, according to Vance, the meeting helped the United States gain some understanding of how the Iranians are negotiating and identify Washington's priorities.
A new round, according to the Western press, may take place on April 16 in Pakistan or Switzerland.
The Wall Street Journal reported on April 14 that Saudi Arabia is putting pressure on the United States to lift the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz and return to the negotiating table. Iran's Houthi allies in Yemen control a long stretch of coast near the Bab al-Mandeb Strait and have "seriously disrupted" the waterway throughout most of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
During negotiations with U.S. representatives in Islamabad on April 13, the Iranian authorities proposed suspending uranium enrichment for up to five years. Tehran has already put forward a similar initiative during the February talks in Geneva. However, after that meeting, American President Donald Trump decided to launch a military operation against Iran.
On April 13, US Vice President Jay Dee Vance, in an interview with Fox News, announced that he had achieved his goals as part of the military operation against Iran and was ready to move on to ending the conflict. According to him, the current situation allows for a gradual curtailment of hostilities.
