The share of used cars in leasing sales has reached a record in Russia

The share of used automotive equipment — passenger cars, light commercial vehicles, trucks and trailers — in leasing sales in Russia in February increased by 10 percentage points year-on-year and reached a historical record of 40%. This was reported on April 13 by Kommersant with reference to Alfa-Leasing data.

The previous maximum figure of 33% was recorded in May – July 2025. The highest share figures in February were also recorded in the segment of passenger cars (an increase from 25% to 36% year-on-year) and light commercial vehicles (from 15% to 24%). In both segments, the previous record set in January of this year was beaten — 28% and 18%, respectively.

In physical terms, sales of used vehicles on the leasing market increased by 45% in February. Sales of used passenger cars increased by 82%, light commercial vehicles — by 32%, trailers — by 17%, and trucks — by 16%.

According to the interlocutors of the publication, entrepreneurs are forced to use the secondary market more, where there are fairly fresh offers, by rising prices for new cars. At the same time, leasing companies have large stocks on their balance sheets, and they are more willing to give discounts, bearing the cost of storing seized property. For leasing companies, working with used equipment is rather a non-core business, but it is absolutely necessary, experts said.
