A change in Hungary's political course after a possible change of government may lead to a rapprochement of the country's position with the European Union (EU) and a cooling of relations with Russia. Denis Denisov, an expert at the Financial University under the Government of the Russian Federation, told Izvestia on April 13, commenting on the victory of Peter Magyar, head of the Hungarian Tisa party, in the parliamentary elections in Hungary.

"Hungary's foreign policy course will change. And according to the statements and pre—election positions voiced by Magyar and his Tisa party, it can be assumed that Hungary's position will be much more in sync with that of Brussels," he said.

According to the expert, this may also affect Budapest's approach to the Ukrainian issue. In particular, Hungary may take a more loyal position to the European Commission in terms of supporting Kiev.

The expert added that in such a scenario, the country risks losing its role as a state focused on defending national interests independently and becoming one of the ordinary participants in European politics.

At the same time, the new government will face serious economic challenges. As Denisov noted, it was precisely economic difficulties that became one of the reasons for the decline in support for the current course.

Commenting on the domestic political situation, the expert stressed that Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban and the Fidesz party are not quitting politics and intend to continue working in the opposition. According to him, the political capital accumulated over the years will allow Orban to maintain influence.

At the same time, significant changes in the political configuration of Central and Eastern Europe as a whole should not be expected. The expert noted that the region remains heterogeneous, and the possible unification of positions will be limited.

On April 12, Magyar announced the victory of his party in the parliamentary elections. He also noted that together they managed to change Orban's system. At the same time, a tense situation remained on the streets of Budapest after the elections. In addition, an active reaction of residents to the preliminary voting results was recorded.
