Every year on April 13, Orthodox believers honor the memory of Hieromartyr Hypatius, Bishop of Gangra. In the national calendar, this day is known as Hypatius the Wonderworker or Ognishche. In 2026, the holiday falls on a Monday. Read about its history, traditions, signs and strict prohibitions in the Izvestia article.

What is the church holiday on April 13th?

Hieromartyr Hypatius was born in the 4th century into a noble and wealthy Christian family, but from a young age he chose not a secular career, but a spiritual path, led a strict, ascetic life, prayed a lot, helped the poor. And in adulthood, he distributed property to those in need.

Hypatius began his church ministry in Gangra, the main city of Paphlagonia in Asia Minor. At first he was appointed reader and caretaker of the temple, then he became a deacon and a presbyter. And after the death of Bishop Athanasius, he became his successor. This decision was supported by both the clergy and the residents of the city, by that time he was already known as a man of deep piety, mercy and firm character.

After becoming bishop of Gangra, Hypatius took up not only church administration, but also the organization of the daily life of the flock. He built temples and prayer houses, appointed priests to villages, organized meals for the poor, distributed alms, and helped widows and orphans. The saint sought to strengthen faith not by violence, but by pastoral word, personal example, and works of mercy.

The saint participated in the First Ecumenical Council in Nicaea in 325, at which the Church formulated the most important foundations of the faith, condemned Arianism (a doctrine that denied the full equality of Jesus Christ with God the Father and claimed that the Son of God was not eternal and was created) and consolidated the church-wide approach to the celebration of Easter. Hypatius participated in the council as Bishop of Gangra and stood on the side of those who defended the Orthodox doctrine of the consubstantiality of the Son of God to the Father.

After the Council of Nicaea, the saint returned to Gangra and continued his struggle against the heretical movements that were spreading in the eastern provinces of the Roman Empire at that time. Hypatius consistently defended church unity, opposed extremes in matters of asceticism and discipline, and urged believers to adhere to the conciliar teaching of the Church.

According to his life, Hypatius became famous not only as a staunch defender of Orthodoxy, but also as a miracle worker and healer. Through his prayers, people received healing from serious illnesses, relief from troubles and help in difficult circumstances. The saint's name became known far beyond Gangra.

The bishop's earthly life ended in martyrdom. According to legend, after one of his trips, he was attacked by heretics. Hypatius was severely beaten, and then thrown from a height to the water. But even during the torture, he prayed for his tormentors. The fatal blow was a stone to the head, which was inflicted by an Arianist woman.

However, the reckoning soon came — before nightfall, she lost her mind and began to torture herself with the same stone. According to church tradition, later, during the burial of Hypatius, through the prayer of the saint before the Lord, she was spared this punishment. And a miraculous spring appeared at the place of his martyrdom.

In Russia, Hypatius was especially revered in Novgorod, being considered the patron saint of posadniks and tysyatskys. And in Kostroma, one of the most famous Russian monasteries, Holy Trinity Ipatievsky, is dedicated specifically to the Holy Martyr Hypatius of Gangra.

Traditions of the national holiday of Hypatius the Wonderworker on April 13

In Russia, the day of the veneration of Hypatius the Wonderworker was considered a time of purification and renewal. The ancestors began the morning with a visit to the temple, they prayed to the saint for the most urgent things — for healing from diseases, for protecting the house from evil spirits and spiritual troubles. The young women asked for conception, a successful pregnancy, an easy birth, and the health of the child.

The ancestors believed that on April 13, a person is especially vulnerable to bad influences, fears, temptations and dark forces. Therefore, the holiday was perceived as a time when the house and the person needed cleansing and additional protection.

After visiting the temple, they took up household chores. On Hypatia, it was customary to put the house in order, sort out the storerooms, and take out the unnecessary. What else could serve, they tried not to throw away, but to give to those in need or take to the church. Also on this day, the garden was put in order, the trees were whitewashed, and the yard and garden were prepared for the warm season.

The second name of the holiday is Flint. Fire in Russia was a symbol of purification and spring renewal of the economy, and ash served as fertilizer for a new life. Therefore, on April 13, the peasants took out hot coals from the stove, lit bonfires on the site, burned last year's leaves and dry litter.

Old things were also thrown into the flames, parting not only with the rubbish accumulated over the winter, but also with illnesses, worries, and family troubles. Then household implements, ploughs and harrows were carried through the flame or next to it, so that the year turned out to be successful, fruitful, and the work was done.

It was believed that on April 13, the flame had healing powers. As many candles as he was old were lit near the patient, and when they burned out, the stubs were thrown into a river or lake, hoping that the disease would go away with the water.

What not to do on the feast of Hypatius the Wonderworker

On Hypatius the Wonderworker, the ancestors tried to avoid actions that, according to beliefs, could bring quarrels, illnesses and failures into the house. So, on a holiday, it was forbidden to swear and sort things out, since the conflict that began on that day could drag on for a long time.

What else you can't do on April 13:

  • to refuse help and charity — indifference to someone else's misfortune will turn into your own losses.;
  • to be lazy, to leave dirty dishes, unwashed things, and clutter in the house — along with them, diseases and a heavy atmosphere will "settle" in the dwelling.;
  • Storing broken and unnecessary things can interfere with renovation and material well—being.;
  • succumbing to fears, gloomy thoughts — such a negative attitude can stay with a person for the whole year.

Folk signs for April 13

On Hypatius the Wonderworker, the ancestors observed nature in order to determine by signs what the coming weeks and the upcoming summer would be like.:

  • strong wind — rain is coming soon;
  • rain in the morning on Hypatia — for a stormy summer;
  • The sun is shining brightly all day — spring will be warm and favorable.;
  • lightning flashed on the Fire — a drought is coming;
  • maple and birch trees actively secrete sap, leading to warming;
  • migratory birds flock in flocks — spring will be favorable;
  • birds returning from warmer climes don't chirp for a long time — the cold weather will linger.

Earlier, Izvestia reported on the signs and strict prohibitions of the special holiday of Birding.
