The Easter service, according to a centuries-old tradition, takes place on the night from Saturday to Sunday. It is during these hours that the main church event of the year takes place in churches across the country, which ends Lent and marks the beginning of the celebration of the Resurrection of Christ. In 2026, divine services will be held on the night of April 11-12. About how the night service takes place and how to prepare for it, see the Izvestia article.

Why is the Easter Liturgy served at night?

The question of the time of the beginning of the Easter service remains one of the most common among parishioners. The night service may seem unusual, however, as the clergy explain, it is not just a tradition, but a deep symbolic choice: it was "in the dark" that the myrrh-bearing wives went to the tomb of Christ and it was during the night hours that the Resurrection took place.

The Holy Scriptures indicate that this happened "on Saturday night," that is, in deep darkness. Therefore, at the beginning of the service, the church may be in semi-darkness, which reflects the state of the world before the Resurrection — expectation, uncertainty, silence.

As the head of the Youth Department of the Stavropol Diocese, Priest Alvian Tkhelidze, explained to Izvestia, the nocturnal nature of the Easter service is connected not only with symbols, but also with the history of the formation of the church charter.

"The Charter was formed in regions with a warm climate — in Palestine and Constantinople, where due to the heat, active life was often postponed to night time. In these circumstances, many important events, including worship services, took place at night. Later, the charter was adopted in Russia, where the climate and rhythm of life are different. Most of the services adapted over time and began to be performed in the afternoon or evening. However, Easter and some other divine services are still performed at night, as originally stipulated in the charter," he noted.

How is the Easter service going?

The Easter service begins late in the evening, usually after 23:00. Parishioners gather in advance to take a seat and prepare for a long service. The first stage is the Midnight Fast, which serves as a transition from the mournful Holy Saturday to the joyful Resurrection of Christ.

This is a short service, during which the alarm lights are extinguished in the temple, and a shroud is placed in front of the Royal Gates — the image of Christ in the tomb. After reading the canon of Holy Saturday, the shroud with the words "I will rise and be glorified" is transferred to the altar, which symbolizes the end of the period of tribulation. At this moment, the temple is immersed in a special expectation.

The climax comes at midnight. The religious procession begins with the ringing of bells, as the faithful, along with the clergy, walk around the temple. This procession symbolizes the meeting with the risen Christ. The procession stops at the closed doors, which represent a sealed coffin. After the three-fold cry of "Christ is risen!" the doors swing open and everyone enters the already illuminated temple.

Then the Easter Matins is celebrated. The choir performs a canon consisting of eight songs, and the clergy perform incense while walking around the temple with a censer. The main chant of the whole night is the troparion "Christ is risen from the dead, death is corrected", which sounds repeatedly and sets the tone for the entire service.

The peculiarity of the Easter service is the almost complete absence of reading. All the texts are sung, which gives the service a special solemnity and joy.

Why do priests' vestments change?

One of the notable traditions of Easter night is the changing of vestments. At the beginning of the service, the priests dress in white robes. This color symbolizes the Divine uncreated light that shone from the Tomb of the Risen Christ. Then they change into red robes, which symbolize the joy of the Resurrection of Christ and the victory of life over death.

"Priests perform divine services in white robes on Holy Saturday and at the beginning of the Easter service. Then, in a particularly solemn part of it, they change into red clothes. And the entire subsequent Easter period, divine services are performed in red robes for 40 days — until the day of the Easter feast," said Priest Alvian.

In some churches, at Easter matins, for each of the eight songs of the canon, the priest can change the vestments using robes of different colors. Thus, the golden one represents the glory of Christ as King and Conqueror of death. Green is the renewal of life, reminding that the Resurrection opens the way to a new spiritual life. Blue shades are associated with the Virgin Mary and symbolize purity, humility and heavenly harmony.

This shift emphasizes that the Resurrection covers the entire church year and all aspects of spiritual life. Each color becomes a kind of theological accent that helps believers to understand what is happening more deeply. However, according to the priest, these are not statutory, but rather local liturgical traditions that give the service more solemnity and colorfulness.

Who can come to the Easter service

Easter in the Orthodox tradition is considered a holiday open to all. Not only regular parishioners come to the temple that night, but also those who attend services rarely or even for the first time. The clergy emphasize that such visits are not only acceptable, but also perceived as a natural manifestation of interest in faith and spiritual life.

"An unbaptized person can come to the Easter service, as well as to any service in the church, but he can become a full-fledged Christian only after he is baptized," said Priest Alvian.

However, there is an important difference between attending a service and participating in the sacraments. Communion, the central sacrament of the liturgy, is available only to baptized Orthodox Christians who have completed spiritual training, including fasting and confession. This rule is connected with the very essence of the sacrament and is not a restriction for the guests of the temple, but only emphasizes its special significance.

The clergy also point out that Easter often becomes an entry point into church life. Many people come to the temple on this particular night, and then begin to become more deeply interested in faith and participate in worship services. Thus, visiting a temple on Easter often becomes for a person the first step towards a more conscious religious life.

How to prepare and behave in the temple

Preparing for the Easter service does not require complicated actions, but it is recommended to approach it consciously. First of all, it is important to specify in advance the start time of the divine service in the chosen church, as it may vary: in some parishes, midnight mass begins around 23:00, in others — closer to midnight. It is better to arrive in advance, 15-20 minutes in advance, to calmly enter, put candles and tune in, without creating a fuss and without disturbing others.

Special attention is paid to the appearance. Clothes should be restrained, closed and neat. Women are traditionally advised to cover their heads with a headscarf, avoid bright makeup and too flashy accessories. Men, on the contrary, should enter the temple without a headdress. It is also important to take into account the weather conditions: it can be cold outside at night, and it can be stuffy in the temple itself due to the large number of people.

Silence and general order must be observed during the service. Mobile phones should be switched to silent mode, and conversations and discussions should be postponed until after the service. It is also not customary to actively move around the temple, especially during moments of prayer and singing.

"In general, if you don't specifically try to disrupt the church order, then you don't have to worry about your behavior. It's enough to behave decently, not defiantly. If a person is poorly oriented in worship, does not know which points are the most important, then you can focus on other believers and do as you like," advised Priest Alvian.

Is it necessary to be on duty all night

Many parishioners are concerned about whether it is necessary to attend the entire night service and stand up. The clergy emphasize that there is no strict requirement here: participation in the Easter service is a voluntary choice, not a test of endurance.

If it is difficult for a person to spend the whole night in the church, he can come to the beginning of the procession or to the morning liturgy, which is also considered a full-fledged part of the Easter service. In the church tradition, it is not the amount of time spent that is more important, but the inner attitude and meaningful participation in the celebration.

At the same time, night service can really be physically challenging, especially for the elderly or those who are not used to standing for a long time. The charter prescribes staying on your feet at key moments — during the reading of the Gospel and the main hymns, however, the priests note that human health is more important than formal observance of the rules.

Is it possible to commemorate the dead on Easter

Another frequent question concerns the commemoration of the dead. According to the priest, no such commemorations are held in the church on Easter days, starting at night. This is due to the fact that Easter is perceived as a time of universal joy, the triumph of life and victory over death, and not as a period of sorrow.

Priest Alvian reminded that the church is moving a special commemoration to Radonitsa, which comes nine days after Easter. On this day, believers visit cemeteries, pray for the dead and share their Easter joy with them, bringing consecrated eggs and cakes to the graves.

At the same time, personal prayer for the dead is not prohibited, but candles are not placed at the service itself. On Easter night, special places for such candles may be closed. However, if a person did this out of habit or ignorance, it is not considered a sin, since the intention and state of the heart are primarily important.
