The President of Djibouti has been re-elected for the sixth time in a row.
The current President of Djibouti, Ismail Omar Guellé, won 97.8% of the vote and was re-elected for a sixth consecutive term. This was reported by the Reuters news agency on April 11.
Fewer than 1 million people live in Djibouti. The country is located on the shores of the Gulf of Aden, at the entrance to the Red Sea. There are military bases of the USA, China, France, Italy and Japan here.
After the victory, Helle posted on his social media page X (ex. Twitter) posted a photo of himself, which he signed with the French word "RÉÉLU" — it translates as "re-elected."
"The victory of 78-year-old Guelleh, who was elected in 1999 to succeed his uncle Hassan Guled Aptidon and whose party dominates national institutions, has never been in doubt," the article says.
The agency clarifies that in October last year, parliament voted to lift the 75-year age limit for presidential candidates, and also canceled a referendum previously necessary to approve a new constitution. The two main opposition parties boycotted the elections.
Toh Lam, General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam, was elected president of the country on April 7 for a term from 2026 to 2031. All 495 Vietnamese deputies voted for this appointment. After his election, To Lam took the oath of office and delivered an official speech to the National Assembly.
