The expert assessed the consequences of Iran's control over the Strait of Hormuz
Iran's control over shipping in the Strait of Hormuz could significantly affect global trade and the energy market. This was stated to Izvestia on April 8 by Evgeny Zlenko, project manager of the Polylog Group.
According to the expert, as part of the two-week pause, Iran, together with Oman, intends to charge fees from ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz. At the same time, the key role in regulating shipping actually passes to Tehran.
"Iran publicly asserts its right to control one of the main maritime arteries. Even if we are formally talking about joint actions, Iran is becoming the center that will set the conditions for navigation in the Persian Gulf," Zlenko said.
In addition, up to 25% of the global trade turnover may be under the influence of Tehran, which increases the importance of the region for the global economy.
According to Denis Denisov, an expert at the Financial University under the Government of the Russian Federation, the decision to charge fees is directly related to the process of forming a possible peace agreement.
"The political consequences of the introduction of fees are in the plane of a potential peace agreement. So, the very fact of the introduction of fees for the passage of the Strait of Hormuz is only an element of a large agreement," Denisov said.
He stressed that such a measure could affect the cost of energy resources.
"Such a measure may raise the cost of energy resources exported from the region somewhat, and as a result will lead to a change in their prices on world markets," the expert explained.
US President Donald Trump said earlier in the day that he had agreed to suspend strikes on Iran for another two weeks. He also explained that the condition for this was the complete unblocking of the Strait of Hormuz and Tehran would fulfill this. The head of the White House said that Washington had received a 10-point proposal from Tehran to resolve the conflict.
The Associated Press (AP) reported at the same time that Iran and Oman will be able to charge fees for the passage of ships through the Strait of Hormuz during the two-week truce. Chris Murphy, a congressman from the Republican Party of the United States, said on April 7 that the terms of the truce between Washington and Tehran were a disaster.
