Psychologist named the causes of the midlife crisis among Russians
The midlife crisis is not a disease and represents a natural stage of psychological development associated with a reassessment of life values. On April 6, a psychologist in the AST approach (Acceptance and Responsibility Therapy), a member of the AKPN Alexandra Grazhdanov told Izvestia about this.
"The midlife crisis is not a diagnosis, not a pathology, but a normal stage of psychological development," the expert noted.
According to her, this period most often occurs at the age of about 40-50 years, but it does not have strict time limits. Unlike the crisis of early adulthood, which usually occurs around the age of 30, the midlife crisis is associated with a deeper revision of the life path and meanings.
The expert explained that the key feature of this condition is the internal reassessment process. A person begins to ask questions about the meaning of life, goals and their own desires, which is associated with the awareness of limited time and already lived experience.
At the same time, it is important to distinguish the midlife crisis from depression and burnout. As the expert noted, during a crisis, a person retains the ability to be interested and active, despite doubts. In the case of depression, on the contrary, there is a decrease in mood, loss of energy, problems with sleep and appetite, as well as a feeling of meaninglessness without the desire for change.
According to the expert, in modern society, gender differences in crisis experience are becoming less pronounced, but some trends persist.
"Men are more likely to focus on achievements, status, and a sense of fulfillment, while women have more questions about the balance of roles," the psychologist added.
The expert also noted the influence of social networks, which enhance the feeling of comparison with others and can provoke a feeling of lagging behind. In conclusion, the specialist added that dealing with the crisis should be aimed not at eliminating it, but at understanding and reassessing life guidelines. According to her, the quality of later life largely depends on how a person goes through this stage.
Clinical psychologist Daria Salnikova told on March 5 how to assess the stability of her self-esteem. She noted that the only truly reliable support is not in external circumstances, but inside the person himself. According to the expert, in unstable times, many people wonder what they can rely on, because money can become worthless, work can disappear, and relationships can end.
