The Rector of Moscow State University Viktor Sadovnichy turned 87 years old
Moscow State University Rector Viktor Sadovnichy turned 87 on April 3. He is a world—renowned mathematician who knows how to turn formulas into real solutions, and the author of a unique simulator for astronauts.
The scientist was congratulated by Russian President Vladimir Putin on the phone, as well as the rector's colleagues from China — one of the largest branches of the university has been operating in China since 2017.
Modern Russian science transcends borders largely due to the energy of the Gardener. Under his leadership, MSU became a truly international quality mark. In Shenzhen, China, they even decided to completely repeat the recognizable outlines of the university.
Sadovnichy has been in the walls of Moscow State University since 1958. A simple guy from the Kharkiv region, the son of a worker and a collective farmer, wanted to do agriculture himself, but he enrolled in the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics at the metropolitan University.
"When I graduated from evening school, I decided to apply. Where to? But I want to be a rural worker. I applied to the Belarusian Agricultural Academy. A friend from the mine who went to night school with me says: "You're a mathematician, what are you doing? Let's go to the MSU Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics!" the rector shared.
A Gardener's vocation is the fundamental science of mathematics. With her help, he solved and solves the most important applied problems. Under his leadership, the Mekhmat group has developed an advanced space simulator, a centrifuge with overloads up to 30g.
"Due to mathematics, we have created all flight conditions: weightlessness, overload, vision in space. These works have been awarded state prizes, all well-known. They brought our cosmonautics to the forefront then, in terms of training astronauts," Sadovnichy explained.
The most important role of a Gardener is an ascetic of Russian science and education. Even in the "dashing" 90s, Viktor Sadovnichy not only preserved, but expanded the university: more than 40 out of 16 faculties grew. At the same time, the plans are much more ambitious now. Viktor Sadovnichy's main project is the construction of a new campus.
"So I sleep and I see both day and night the beginning of construction, the end of the campus of Moscow University. I wanted new applicants who came to Moscow University to step over the threshold and say it's a miracle. Equipment, professorship, furnishings. This is my main dream," he said.
On the same day, Sadovnichy told how Lomonosov Moscow State University (MSU) trains the elite of other countries in its foreign branches. According to him, MSU currently has branches in six foreign countries: Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, and China.
