A passenger on the Moscow – Chelyabinsk train described the moment of the accident

At the moment when the Moscow –Chelyabinsk train began to derail, many passengers were still asleep and did not immediately realize what was happening. On April 3, Izvestia was told about this by eyewitnesses traveling in the train.

"We were asleep at that moment, and the train started rocking violently. Then faster and faster, the mugs flew off the table and our carriage tilted," explained Maria.

The woman clarified that she was lucky to ride in the second car — the ones following it, according to her, completely derailed. Maria noted that the emergency services quickly responded to the incident and promptly helped the victims.

"At first, of course, they didn't understand what was going on. When the shaking started, I immediately thought it was a derailment. And the fact that we would turn over next was unexpected and unpleasant," said another passenger Leonid.

The derailment of seven cars of passenger train No. 302 Moscow – Chelyabinsk was reported earlier in the day. The Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations informed Izvestia that there were no fatalities as a result of the derailment. The number of injured in the incident has increased to 35. One of the train cars caught fire, and the fire was extinguished. At the time of the incident, the people on the train were asleep.

A criminal case has been opened into the incident under Article 263 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation ("Violation of the rules of traffic safety and operation of railway transport"). The preliminary reason for the train derailment in the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation was the unsatisfactory condition of the railway track. Russian Railways reported that 352 passengers of the train were taken to Ulyanovsk-Tsentralny station. The rest will be brought in soon, and three temporary accommodation facilities have been prepared for this purpose.
