An important step in preparing for severe floods is to clear the territory of snow and organize drainage systems. Nikita Tyrin, Director of Sberbank Insurance projects, told Izvestia about this on April 3.

"Clear the snow from the foundation area and clean the drainage system: ditches, storm drains and culverts. If necessary, dig additional drainage trenches along the site — direct the water away from the house, to natural lowlands or common drainage systems. Unite with your neighbors, coordinate with them the direction of the meltwater drainage, make joint trenches — then the water will recede faster and it will be possible to reduce damage to houses," said Tyrin.

In addition, it is worth taking care of the protection of the foundation and basement. Thus, the expert recommends treating the foundation with hydrophobic compounds and checking the tightness of basement windows and doors.

"Stock up on household pumps for pumping water, buckets, shovels and other tools, and assemble an emergency evacuation kit: drinking water, non—perishable food, a first-aid kit, a flashlight, candles, warm clothes, rubber boots, and communications equipment," the specialist said.

The expert also reminded about ensuring the safety of pets and property. For example, portable cages should be prepared or arrangements should be made with animal shelters. In addition, light structures such as greenhouses and garden furniture, as well as building materials, must be removed from the site or secured. In addition, it is important to lift valuable property onto high shelves to avoid damage.

In case of flooding, housing can be insured against damage, but for this you need to issue a policy in advance, which should cover floods and floods. At the same time, the fact of flooding itself must be confirmed by official sources.

"Even with an insurance policy, prevention reduces the risk of damage and simplifies the settlement of losses. Regularly check the condition of the drainage, roof and foundation — this will help to avoid problems not only in spring, but also at any time of the year," concluded Tyrin.

On March 6, the Russian Hydrometeorological Center published a report from which it follows that in the Central, Volga, Siberian and Far Eastern Federal Districts — in 36 Russian regions — flooding is possible, during which the water level in rivers will significantly exceed the norm.

Viktor Orlov, head of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Russia in the Novosibirsk Region, reported on March 30 that meltwater flooded 21 household plots and three basements of apartment buildings in the region. It was clarified that the situation became more complicated on March 28 due to the warming.
