Libya called it impossible to predict the movement of the Arctic Metagaz at sea
The damaged Russian gas carrier Arctic Metagaz was swept into the Mediterranean Sea after the cable connecting it to the tugboat that transported it broke. As Khaled Ghulam, the official representative of the Libyan Committee for Emergency Situations, noted on April 2, it is absolutely impossible to make a forecast for the direction of the vessel's movement.
"The damaged Russian tanker got out of control due to adverse weather conditions and wave heights exceeding seven meters. The cable connecting the vessel to the tugboat that has been towing it in recent days has snapped," he told TASS.
According to him, given the fluctuations in the weather in the water area, no one can predict the fate of the drifting vessel or the direction in which it will be blown away by the winds. The Libyan authorities have deployed all resources to contain the situation and prevent threats to the coast of the region.
Earlier in the day, the Libyan authorities reported the loss of control over the Russian gas carrier Arctic Metagaz after the vessel broke away from the tugboat and began to drift in the Mediterranean Sea. They also warned that the tugboat would not be able to return for re-mooring, and urged other ships not to approach the Russian gas carrier.
The attack on the Arctic Metagas near Malta became known on March 4. He was damaged by Ukrainian boats. Later, the Russian Embassy reported that all 30 people who were on board the ship at the time of the attack were rescued by the efforts of the Russian and Maltese sides.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said at the same time that Moscow reserves the right to take political and diplomatic measures in connection with the attack on a Russian gas carrier in the Mediterranean Sea. Russian President Vladimir Putin called the strike on the gas carrier a terrorist attack. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov noted on March 5 that Western countries are not even trying to hide Ukraine's involvement in the attack on the Arctic Metagas. He also called the Kiev authorities terrorists. The Egyptian vessel Mardave began towing on March 30.
