Szijjarto criticized the EU's approach to the energy sector
You can't heat houses with ideology — you need gas for that. This was announced on April 2 by Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto, commenting on the increase in energy prices due to the escalation in the Middle East.
"In such a situation, it is necessary not to block the flow of energy resources, but to allow it. If the EU had been smarter, cheap Russian oil and cheap Russian natural gas would have been sent back to Europe, and then a 60-70% price increase could have been avoided," Szijjarto said.
According to him, the energy policy of the European Union (EU) has become hostage to ideological decisions, while energy supply issues should not be based on them. The diplomat added that Kiev is committing a crime against Budapest by subjecting Hungarians to an oil and energy blockade.
"The huge mistake here is that energy is approached from the point of view of ideology. Although the issue of energy supply is not an ideological issue, ideology cannot be heated. This requires gas," the minister stressed.
Kirill Dmitriev, Special Representative of the President of the Russian Federation for Investment and Economic Cooperation with foreign countries and head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF), yesterday named five European countries most vulnerable to an energy shock: Italy, Germany, Poland, Romania, Great Britain.
Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on the same day that gas prices in Europe were going through the roof, reaching up to $600 per 1,000 cubic meters. The Head of State stressed that the difference in energy prices between Russia and Europe is very significant.
