Japan's deployment of long-range missiles is necessary to strengthen the country's deterrence and rapid response capabilities. This was announced on Tuesday, March 10, by Japanese Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi.

The head of the Defense Department commented on the beginning of the deployment of appropriate types of weapons at two bases of the country's ground Self-Defense Forces. According to the minister, these measures are dictated by the current geopolitical situation in the region.

"This is an extremely important initiative aimed at strengthening our country's deterrence and response capabilities," Kyodo news agency quoted Koizumi as saying.

During his speech, the head of the department also once again voiced the thesis that the current situation in the field of national and regional security is the most difficult and complex since the end of World War II.

The program to equip the army with long-range missiles is part of Japan's updated national security strategy. Earlier, the country's authorities approved plans to acquire and develop weapons capable of reaching targets at a considerable distance from the Japanese islands, which marked a departure from the principle of exclusively defensive policy that Tokyo adhered to in the post-war period. The new missile systems are expected to be integrated into the overall defense system in the near future.

The Japan Times (JT) newspaper reported on March 9 that the Japanese Ground Self-Defense Forces (SSF) delivered launchers and other equipment for long-range missiles to the Kangun base in Kumamoto city. Preparations are underway ahead of the deployment of the upgraded Type-12 missile system ("Type-12").
