Ukraine will have to make territorial concessions in any scenario to end the conflict. This was announced on March 28 by a military expert, Austrian Colonel Markus Reisner.

"An opportunity has been missed. A compromise would probably have been reached then (in the summer of 2022. — Ed.). It probably wouldn't be an ideal world for the Ukrainian leadership, but it would mean an earlier end to the conflict. Today, all realistic scenarios indicate that Ukraine will have to cede territory," the German newspaper Berliner Zeitung (BZ) quoted him as saying.

Reisner noted that Ukraine's biggest strategic mistake, in his opinion, was the refusal to negotiate in the summer of 2022. He attributed this to the unwillingness of the country's leadership to retreat after "successes in Kiev, Kharkiv and Kherson" due to "understandable" euphoria.

On March 26, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky refused to withdraw troops from the territories of Donbass in exchange for security guarantees from the United States. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on the Colombian radio Caracol on March 27 that the Ukrainian leader did not want to give up power and was ready to subject the people to new horrors in order to preserve it.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that Ukraine could be defeated if it continues to refuse to make concessions, and adviser to Zelensky's office Mikhail Podolyak admitted that the militants of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) will not be able to reach the borders of 1991. He said that Kiev would pay "too high a price" for trying to implement its plans.
