Canada's new restrictive measures against Russia are a formality timed to coincide with the meeting of the foreign ministers of the Group of Seven (G7) countries in France. This was stated on March 27 by Russian Ambassador to Ottawa Oleg Stepanov in an interview with TASS.

The diplomat noted that these steps are being taken by the cabinet of Prime Minister Mark Carney solely to demonstrate activity in front of G7 allies and report to the internal anti-Russian lobby.

"The Canadian illegal sanctions are not valid. This is a paper declaration. Timed to coincide with the G7 meeting, so that Mark Carney's cabinet could at least make itself known to the members of this anti—Russian club," Stepanov stressed.

The ambassador also added that the Canadian authorities should spare taxpayers' money, which is spent on compiling "such empty lists."

The head of the ruling Union of Independent Social Democrats party in Republika Srpska Bosnia and Herzegovina, Milorad Dodik, said on the same day that anti-Russian sanctions were harming the West itself. He noted that it would be better if there were no sanctions, so that people, states and peoples could work freely, without any possibility to prevent them from doing so.
